Fact: The last new steam loco built for British Railways was in March 1960. From then until 1964/5, the various loco works had all the time to overhall like never before. It was almost a period of steam renaissance. My delight was to go to say Shrewsbury, just to witness overhalled locomotives on running in turns sent from Crew works. After 1965, it really went to pot. I used to hide my eyes rather than watch & see the state that our one time steam glories had been reduce to. Can you imagine my delight when I saw an ex works condition 8F working the down Bescot freight through the then newly completed Coventry station. The routine for this freight train was for it to wait in the Leamington loop and not be cleared until it could proceed without having to stop before it reached the refuge siding past Tile Hill. It would then continue to Stetchford where it branched off towards Bescot. Whilst Coventry station was being re-built, it was diverted along the Kenilworth to Berkswell Line, its one time former route. Stuff was added to the north bound, at Coventry right up until the early nineties. Often hauled by a pair of class 25s. My son Michael loved the sound of both diesel engines pulling away for all their worth, when we were trainspotting on Friday evenings. Guess what? I did too.
