This map is from a general board of health report 1849, marking a kiln as a brick kiln. I didn't know the Stoke area so not sure if it is the one this post is referring to. Our house in Tamworth is in the area of old brick kiln sites. When we had our garden wall rebuilt a few years ago our builder found solid clay.

Hi Anne Wave No, those kilns were later and further north. Kilns popped up in various places. Gulson Road was once Brick Kiln Lane as was Leicester Street. Apart from dishes and pots, the city needed a lot of roof tiles. Bricks were used for chimneys and upmarket buildings first. Followed by nog/nogging (replacing wattle and daub between timbers) and finally cheaper housing. I'm assuming that Tile Hill was a key tile making area too?

Hi Anne, Stoke is a large sprawling district, and having various parts such as Stoke Aldermoor, Stoke Green, Stoke Heath, etc. makes it awkward to navigate for someone not brought up in the area. The bit we're interested in is probably mostly known as "Middle Stoke", and I've marked a red cross on the map where the 1911 kilns were found and a square for the 1917 finds. Smile
