Hi, just asking for some help please According to the 1921 Census, my grandmother was living with her grandparents in Colony Cottages. I am assuming these homes were taken down before WW2. I am trying to identify where they would have been. Possibly on an axis between Foleshill and Holbrook Lane. I did have a quick browse through the forum but if any can point me in the right direction please, I would be grateful. Many thanks!

Hi MerciaFM, welcome to the forum. Looking through the newspapers they appear in them from 1916. It says they were built for workers in Holbrook Lane. They were demolished in 1935 and appear to be have been very basic. In 1949 an article describes it as the old Colony Cottage land so obviously nothing had been built on it by then. Hope this helps.

Hope you can see the cottages on this map, the blue triangle centre bottom. I have copied this from "We invented the wheel, the story of Dunlop". If mods think I am infringing copyright, please remove.

Thank you Anne, with your direction I located Colony Cottages in the 1935 directory.

Hi, Many thanks for rapid response. I can see the blue triangle centre bottom but unfortunately, I can’t make out any road names to help with orientating that map with a more recent one. There is something at Kew that suggests the land was sold in 1928, which ties in with the cottages being removed in the time frame you mentioned. And there are a couple of references out there about the cottages, perhaps intended to be temporary. Thankyou!

Hi Mercia FM, welcome to the forum. This map might help you orientate where the cottages were.

This is the 'Men's Hostel' on the north side of Dunlop but look like they may have had a similar footprint to the cottages. They certainly look temporary.

Many thanks everyone, very grateful for your help I think it's just where Lockhurst Lane changes to Holbrook Lane. The X formed by the road and rail was a clue! Thankyou

Area under discussion at BFA Colony Cottages just above the centre where the rail crosses the road. Looking the other way with the Colony Cottages bottom right. Oh have I missed BFA!

The junction of Lockhurst Lane, Holbrook Lane, & Burnaby Road, prior to the construction of the later by-pass - Colony Cottages would have been just past where that row of houses now stands.
OddSock: Particularly interested in the family surnames Cowley, Shale, & Pratt in Coventry!
