We know that this was pre 1883/4 because that was when they repaired the tower and spire. Thomas was there in the directories in 1874 and 1868 but I can't find a Pegg on either and he doesn't appear until 1886. So the photo is sometime between 1874 and 1883. I must start a register of key landmarks like the tower for dating photos.

Don't think I'd seen this temporary display before though it's another view of the Baptist Chapel ruins -

Another couple of images from Peter Wright's father's collection taken just pre-war - I've zoomed in on the images a little to focus on the important captures aside from the usual standardised views - especially liking the view in the distance of this first one on the spot where The Herbert is today:

Wow, these are fab - important views showing different angles from the usual ones. Even just being taken a few yards away from the standard places gives us a snippet of rarely seen and long gone buildings.

Agreed Rob - Peter has actually just contacted me saying he'd like to donate them to me. I've told him they would be great on CD! Big grin

Very nice Double thumbs up Thanks to Peter and Neil. On the right it looks like a modern building sandwiched between two old jettied buildings but the 'new' building was probably also old and originally jettied. You can see a small bay window. The building originally had two, one either side of the door. Bays were odd additions to later buildings but not uncommon to pre Georgian ones. The bays remained but the jetties look like they were removed to give the building a more modern look. Sometimes they only removed the upper jetty and bricked up past the central overhang but in the case the width of the road/pavement didn't allow for that. However, having extended out with bay windows, the owners wanted to keep the features, even though they also reduced the pavement. At some point before 1850 the second bay was removed. I've not seen enough images of the demolition to confirm my theory though, but the building is an odd shape for it to have been built after 1700.

I'll be able to get a better copy of them when Peter sends over to me Helen so I'll repost them here.
