Hi Neil, the buildings on the right were originally part of the Meteor Cycle Works but were part of the Lion Foundry I think by the war. On the left is a block starting with The Spread Eagle pub - its original location but it moved to the corner of the market while its old building was demolished and rebuilt. It returned and the market location was demolished. It's probably due to the newer construction that saw those buildings survive. |

Neil
I rather think the crumpled bit at the corner and beyond Owen Owen was MHW, they were on the right of West Orchard. Beyond that was the church and houses. |

Whilst looking on BFA for a query on FB I noticed this building on a 1949 image. There was not much left on West Orchard by then - on maps it appears to be marked as 'Lavs' but looks too posh to be a loo to me! Anyone know what it was?

Hi Neil. I think you can see it on the right on Rob's Then and now picture. West Orchard. I think I can see it on the insurance map Number 4 The block of buildings number 17 but it is impossible to read what it says over the building. It may be Public something. so sorry not much help. |

It fronted onto West Orchard. It's described as a basket factory in the insurance maps.
I am not surprised it shows up on insurance maps! Firetrap was a word often used. I never knew that there was any mention of it anywhere. It was not producing much by the time the picture was taken. The basket making industry was very much on the decline. It had been a restricted occupation in wartime, and baskets could only be made for war purposes. Also the agreements concerning the trades having to use locally made baskets had lapsed. I can just about remember three old chaps doing repairs for market baskets and also parts work for the Birmingham picnic basket trade. Plastic was starting to take over. One of my uncles opened a factory in Kent using plastic injection moulding machines liberated from Italy. Supplies of willow were haphazard. 1947 was a bad weather year for the few growers that were struggling on, unlike the prewar years when all aspects of the trade were blooming, especially the sidecar trade. The building itself was not built specifically but had been a market admin building. Family stories state that it was against this building that a cart was placed for the speech of Thomas Mann. Does this mean that it was the building next door to the pubs shown in the old photographs? Was it the original early Market House? |

Barely West Orchard really but I'm sure that's the old road in front about to completely disappear for post-war redevelopment. Thanks to Dean Nelson on FB.

I'm guessing that the road leading away from the camera would be the one that ran into the old market. This might make the basis of a good before and after, with this as the after. |

Following the Coventry Society talk Rob and I attended last week by David Fry, I noted an image on David's presentation of West Orchard that I'd not see before. I contacted David about it and he has kindly sent me the image to share plus another with his permission. They are both crackers - the first one is 1930's. They are terrific captures of the Road rarely covered by the camera and must be the 'finds-of-the-week!' David was telling me he is slowly releasing his private collection to Ben to upload to Cov Digital so lookout for more 'treasures!'

Going to need help with identifying the actual spots though Helen - Slightly confused by that building in the background on the right edge of the 1930s image...I think its the area where the West Orchard chapel was....

Could the two jutting-out buildings ahead - on the left nearer - on the right farther on - be the yellow and red highlighted buildings in this map extract from c1888 ?

This looks like the best image of the area from BFA 1920. |
