Now I have traced my family tree back to my great great great grandfather on both sides of my family, on my father's side every member of the family was born in Foleshill but I have been told that Foleshill did not come under Coventry but was named as district outside of Coventry, could anyone please enlighten me.

Hi Bernie 1 I was born in Foleshill, Parkstone Road and was always told that Coventry ended at the Gas Works Bridge, where the new Arena is now, my father worked at the Gas Works all through the war, and was known as the Foleshill Gas works, over the bridge was Longford. Do I know any of your rellies?

From 1899 to 1928 yes. According to the map in the "Coventry We Have Lost: Vol 1" the remainder of Foleshill and Longford was officially incorporated into Coventry in 1928.

Up to 1928, Coventry extended to the bottom of Cashs Lane after that it became Foleshill. Longford and Bedworth were both part of Foleshill. This can cause a lot of confusion with family history as families living in Bedworth will probably be listed as Foleshill. Even Hawkesbury and Sowe were listed under Foleshill.

Hi downunder, our family name is Strong, we used to own a farm where St Pauls Road is now, after it was made a compulsory purchase by the then council the family brought houses in Princess Street.

I found this about Gambles Building WHO were the Gambles, the coal dealers of Edgwick, Lockhurst Lane and Foleshill? And what was Gamble's buildings which once stood on the site of Edgwick Park? I REMEMBER Gamble's Buildings from the 1930s as a grim tenement of dingy brick on the right of the entrance to Foleshill recreation ground, Edgwick. On the other side of the entry was Foleshill House, which had been WH Grant's home. In 1851 the buildings were the only inhabited houses between Foleshill House and Broad Street. To quote from memoirs of Bob Maddox and Charles Cant (from the 1920s): "Gamble's Buildings - these were about half a dozen very old houses owned by a man named Gamble - they were reputed to be haunted and no-one would go up the pathway leading to them after dark, except the very brave courting couples. It was very dark up there. "Old Man (William) Gamble always used to dress up and go in the carnival. On Sundays he put on his silk hat and took his (horse-drawn) van to church by Cash's, because he was a Christadelphian. His business was being a knacker (horse-slaughterer), which is why they called him Knacker Gamble. He would work a horse to death and then buy another one." William Gamble could trace his ancestors back to a Henry Gamble born in Mowsley, Leicestershire, about 1771. The name of his grandfather, William Gamble, is inscribed on Station Street West Methodist Church, and his gravestone stands in front of St Paul's Church, recording that he died on December 28, 1897 aged 89.

The 1871 Census enumerator started out on Lythalls Lane, then headed down the Coventry Hinckley Turnpike Road, recording The Three Horseshoes (which was no 7 on his schedule) - your Porter family were no 16 on the schedule so you can see that they lived somewhere just south of The Three Horseshoes on what became Foleshill Road Hope this helps Thumbs up

I worked at the Co-op grocery emporium on the corner of Holmsdale Rd and Foleshill Rd up at "The Wolfe" for a couple of months in 1963, whilst waiting to join the navy as a junior entrant, and delivered groceries on my bike all over the area. There was a massive Co-op department store opposite with a fascinating pneumatic system for sending money to and from the accounts department. The grocery emporium had a cigarette kiosk in the angle of the building and was very busy indeed. Nearby was the "Livi" baths where we all learned to swim and collect our treasured 1 length certificate and then perfected our technique in the Oxford cut or Wyken Slough. There was a park further down the Foleshill Rd towards Cross Rd where I courted Maureen James as innocent 14 year olds in the summer of 62. Happy days, I wish you well Maureen, wherever you may be.

I used to love watching that tube system in my local Co-op. It would fascinate me how the container would zip from one end of the building to the other in the blink of an eye - and then seconds later paperwork and change would come back again. Marvellous!

Small world Philip! Although I spent a fair bit of time hanging around there after school and Saturdays I don't remember the "Boss" or his son.

Jack Bond had several Greengrocers shops in Coventry. Another was in Clay Lane. Wave I never saw either of them at any of their shops either. In contrast, my mum used to nearly live in her shops. Finger on the pulse, she used to say to me. Wave

Hi. Wave It's often the case that a whole area takes on the name of one building. The General Wolfe is such a case. If someone said that they were "going to or up the Wolfe", it did not always mean to the pub. My first branch of Lloyds Bank was at the Wolfe. A gents outfitters (still there) shop where I bought stuff over the years was/is up the Wolfe. The Co-op was up the Wolfe. The word Wolfe is a lot easier to say than "the junction of Station St. West, Station St. East & Foleshill Rd". Telling you that has taken longer than for me to get there. Lol We could start a new topic on areas that are named after the local pub. By the way, I used to live at the Devon. Oh my Maybe leave it at that though. Hey! Thumbs up
