Good shot from the cathedral spire of the footprint of the library post-war and those Council canteen buildings along the line of old Derby Lane.

Another beauty from Tony McSweeney's Newspaper clipping's collection. Dated July 25th 1940. Rare to see that side before the damage looking west towards the junction with Derby Lane - That's Dave McGrory's head bottom left Rob! Big grin

And another - not very good quality I'm afraid but the original photo must be within the Telegraph collection somewhere. Shows the line of old Derby Lane - plus the council canteen - and an old well!

Canley library, Queen Margaret's Road, taken today. I was a member of this library around 1955/56 and remember the wooden filing draws and the date stamp that you got in the book that you were taking out. There were also tables and chairs for reading inside and there was always a big SHUSH for us noisy kids.

This has been posted on a FB group. I never knew that there had been a library on Clay Lane:

Blimey, me neither! With Stoke Library virtually around the corner, I'd have thought there was no need.

Probably a private business loanig books for a fee as a library. There were a number about, I believe pre war. I used to use the one by the Maudsley in the 1950's When we had the newsagents in Burley it was called the Library no doubt from an earlier use.
