Anyone recall the gun pillbox (not sure if that's the right name for it) in the middle of the roundabout.

No Meerkat I don`t remember that at all. That island was so simple in those days, nowadays I call it the island from hell, and try to avoid it if I can. When Peugeot were still going, it was a nightmare at rush-hour Sad

Yes you're right it was a lot smaller them days but in the middle of it there was this pillbox, as kids we used to go and look at it on our way to Ryton swimming pool, there was a time when you could get inside it until it was filled in. I agree today it is a nightmare, not that I have been round for a while now.

There are two chasses being driven around in this article. They are both Atkinsons, not Daimler. One has a 5 cylinder Gardner engine, the other a 6 cylinder Gardner engine. They have both been fitted with Self Change gearboxes for experiment evaluation. They are being driven by Self Change fitters who often called in to Watery Lane works for a chat and a cup of tea.

Atkinson, a northern lorry manufacturer who also make buses between 1953 and 1964. Eventually they were taken over by Seddon.
