I was born in 1948 just across the road at no 30 LFS. I Used to play in the sand at a very young age in the builders yard. When it was clocking off time you stayed away from those gates otherwise you would get mowed down with the flood of cycles coming through them, five minutes later you could not see one of them. Big grin

I remember the Alex very well, Neil. Also the other 'fleapit', the Plaza - although I don't remember catching anything from there. Roll eyes

My dad could have been one of the cycling stampede. He worked there in the Jobbing Shop from 1938 but I think he moved to the Model Room at Copsewood sometime about 1948. I believe he said GEC Lower Ford Street was the Radio Works when he was there. The Francis Barnett was further along to the right, on the bend. I remember looking inside when the doors were open in summer and seeing the engines being assembled ~1956. Wiki says the plant closed in 1962.

NeilsYard I was in Coventry last week to attend my sister's funeral and stayed at an Airbnb at 11A Lower Ford Street. I was surprised when your post came up. The property was behind the first house in Lower Ford Street, I think it would have been part of the old Francis Barnett site. There are now two large blocks of flats on the site which seem to be student accommodation. I was surprised at the amount of rubbish left on the street in Lower Ford Street, we are not used to seeing this in Perth. We used the X1 bus service to get to and from Birmingham Airport, good value at £2.00 per journey and runs every 20 minutes. Alan H

Hi Alan Wave Sorry for your loss - a shame we couldn't have met up with Rob etc for one of our breakfasts. I didn't think there was much left of the old FB site. Do you have a link to the Airbnb at all or any pics?

Neils Yard After reading the details of the Airbnb site, I have realised it was not part of the FB site but was a coach house. There is a similar one behind the old Chapman glass shop, this also seems to have been modernised. Alan H

On 11th Dec 2014 3:24pm, Prof said: I recall that the Lower Ford Street chapel was called Rehoboth or similar name. On the opposite side near a bus stop was the Welsh chapel with of course the notice board written in Welsh. I think this was nearer to the Art College, Ford Street.
