Lots of very lovely, very attractive young kennel maids. Used to race 2 nights a week, can't remember what nights they were though, I'm sure that Leicester was on Wednesday and Saturday. Lots and lots of happy memories, as a result of our time there we went on to buy a greyhound between us, by that time Coventry was closed so our dog was kennelled at Hall Green dog track in Birmingham. Not sure when it closed, probably mid 60's, if not before, would be my guess. A very basic sort of building and stadium, if I recall correctly. We had both been to Caludon Castle School, so we named our dog Caludon Sandy, was to be the first of many. We actually registered the prefix. As we were quite young at the time, early 20's, other distractions came along. Happy happy days, and happy happy memories for me. Thankyou.

They always insisted on having really fresh eggs and not ones that had been hanging around in the shop for a time. So nothing but the best for the dogs!

Hi all Wave I have enjoyed reading the posts on this thread. I understand that there was a lot of interaction with Hall Green Stadium in Birmingham which also included speedway at the time. My mum & dad told me stories about the good times that were had at Lythalls Lane Stadium, both dogs & speedway. Travelling to Hall Green on outings was a big journey then for most people. Even a subject that I have not had a lot of input on is so fascinating to read about. It's all part of our history. Thank you to all that have posted on this. Cheers

Very interesting topic to me. Further to Philip's post, someone, not sure who, ran coaches to Leicester and Hall Green. We used to get the Leicester coach by the Pippin, think the Hall Green coach from town. If we were lucky, my friend's dad used to take us in his A35! What a journey that was. Greyhounds have played a part in my life, several girlfriends, and the lady that was to become my wife, were met due to the greyhounds. That's another story, she lived in as a kennelmaid at a kennels in Roade, near Northampton (Roade had a railway station in those days).

Hi everyone Just wanted to say I was thrilled to see the old stadium photo, my family used to race and win there back in c1930, thought I'd show you a couple of trophies from back then, hope you enjoy unfortunately they're very dirty and very bumpy as they survived a blitz attack. They are away being hopefully brought back to almost original condition I will reshow once I have then back. The first one is from a Charity Meeting held on June 24th 1936 The large one with the dog we think it's similar age but will have more detail hopefully soon as we're in contact with the company that made it, Pinter Bros in Sheffield.

Wondered how many people on here have memories of Coventry Greyhound Stadium, and what went on there? Any memories of any greyhounds, trainers, or kennel aids?

The only memory I have as I wasn't very old was when I went with my dad and liked to pick the pretty tickets up off the floor!

Yes, the first dog track opened at White City, London, three weeks before I was born in 1927. I believe I posted on here, a team of crooks, including policemen, came from Brighton in the middle 50's, somehow greased all the traps bar trap one with butter. It skated in, there was uproar, but the result stood, we all got paid out. I had previously had trouble with a guy and threatened him, he told me to back trap one. While the race uproar and delay went on the traps were quickly cleaned. It was a different life back then, and I was in the know more or less through my gambling. No doubt that dogs ran under different names, but cleverly worked, great fun and risk, and profitable.

It would appear to be that the dog track in Cowley Road Wyken has been forgotten. It was in the corner of Cowley Road/Hermitage Road and was a builders yard in the 1950s. Mods note: See separate thread.

Lythalls Lane. It opened in 1928 as a speedway track till 1936 then it became a greyhound track, and Wyken closed, and I went to all of them including White City and I'm almost certain the first speedway, and I rode a few circuits round Brandon track in the fifties. Everything true.

Kaga. I know we are distantly related through my mum's side of the family (the Lesters) but on my father's side (Oldham) and his mother (Reddington) I remember very well my great uncle Fred Reddington. He worked at the Lythalls Lane dog track in the 1950's and he took me and my elder brother a few times. Don't know if you ever knew him (he was born 1897). I have attached a photo taken at The New Inn (Foleshill Rd, opposite Windmill Rd). My dad Arthur Oldham is on the left and great uncle Fred is on the right. Don't know who the guy in the middle is. All of them drinking Mild I notice.

Yes I know the face, the features of the Oldhams. Yes our two families lived and worked together for over a century. Did you read the post I sent you on the tragic accident of the ten year Oldham boy way back a century ago? The boy and girl, my sister and I went to school with and Greg informed me ran the Aldermans Green post office, ten years ago, Oh yes, one of them I did speak to once at the Lythalls Lane track around 54 I believe. Guess some of them still live near the cut.
