Foster Care Homes in Coventry

I have a friend who was in several foster care homes during 1960's. Being young she has very little memory of who or where she was placed. She would like to know a little more of her childhood days. She remembers that one place where she was fostered was run by nuns. Does anyone know of where this home may have been? She has been in touch with Coventry City Council but sadly they have no records of children fostered out in the 1960's. Thank you. Gilly.

Hi Gilly As per usual I don't know the answer but might suggest a search on the forum for orphanages and children's homes. I'm guessing that kids would first be placed at one of those before being chosen for direct fostering? This area of information seems to be in great demand (see the St Faith's topic) but it's not one where I have seen much success. However that may be because people find out elsewhere and never come back.

Back in the 1970's there were nuns in the big property at the corner of Queen Mary's Rd and Foleshill Rd. It is currently the Edgwick Medical Practice but could have been a convent then. It is certainly big enough to have been some sort of residential home but I am afraid that is as much as I remember.

A bit of research reveals that the property at 2 Queen Mary's Rd was in fact the convent of the Little Sisters Of The Assumption. They are a worldwide religious organisation dedicated to the care of the sick. They moved to this property after the second world war, it was previously a doctor's surgery, a use to which it has now reverted. Basically the sisters went out into the community to visit those who were sick, whether at home or in hospital. There is an excellent article in the Coventry Telegraph describing them as the 'Angels of Foleshill' and showing photographs of them setting off on their visits using motor scooters and a moped. Sorry if I was a bit off track regarding foster homes.
