Nath

Hi Nath, welcome to the forum Wave As far as I can tell, yes, 11 Canal Road was the same in 1926. The road itself was already there in 1906, although it hadn't got any houses at that point. It seems to have been different from its neighbours from the start although the roof extension is obviously newish.

Hi Nath Thumbs up 11 Canal Road or "Avenue House" (by the name stone) was mentioned in Feb 1914 in the Coventry Evening Telegraph regarding a construction of a 'store shed' for a Mr Henry Harrison. The house is mentioned again in January 1933 upon it being put up for sale. There's another image of the house in July 2008: If you look at the stone lintels above each window they match the design of others in the street. I'd imagine this design would be difficult and expensive to replicate. Also, the name stone suggests it's originality. The roof extension as mentioned by Helen, is interesting as it does not have the stone lintel design suggesting it was installed later (?) and if the pattern was replicated to be in keeping with the others, you'd imagine it would be present there too (assuming the wooden frame of the extension could hold a stone lintel). Between 11 and 13 Canal Road there is an overlap of large blocks built into the wall. I'm not an expert in construction but I'd imagine this would be extremely difficult (and rather unnecessary) to do if you were inserting a new property into a gap violating a party wall. I've looked in the planning records and couldn't see anything about a new house being built (although ever since the historical planning application documents overhaul in 2018 because of GDPR rules my searches are no longer fully comprehensive).

The house shown is in Foleshill near Cross Road, not Longford. Canal Road, Longford, was renamed Lady Lane, Longford, in the 1930s. My uncle lived at number 11 in the 1940s - 1960s. Demolished 1980s. In 1923 this house was the site of a murder/suicide.

Ohhhh This is interesting @Philex31!!! That's really opened things up. Well done Philex! Double thumbs up A post in the Longford thread by @Morgana corresponds with what you're saying:
On 8th Jul 2012 10:37pm, morgana said: Does any one know where Lady Lane Longford got its name from or whom its named after, previously called Canal Road. Also why it was renamed? I thought it be named after Lady Herbert.

This newspaper clip from Jan 1923 again corresponds to @Philex31. Interestingly describes the house in great detail being a detached end house in a cul-de-sac. The rest of the article makes for somewhat uncomfortable reading. Thanks to @Philex31 for potentially putting us on the right track Cheers-Smile

That's excellent, Philex, thank you - I've just renamed the title of this topic. Smile

Hello, If my brain had been working, I knew a signwriter who lived in Lady Lane, that used to be Canal Road. Not far from one of our passed members, Morgana. Please carry on with this discussion, it's intriguing. Thanks to everyone who is contributing. No wonder I had to put security gates at Longford park.

in 1921 and 1926, only the Foleshill version of Canal Road was listed. In 1921 F B Thacker and J Garner sausage maker were at no 11 and in 1926 it was Jack Boswell living there. Though Lady Lane is not mentioned in either. Perhaps if Nath could expand on what he's looking for, we could nail it more firmly?

Hiya, Thank you to all who have responded. I was just going to say I was looking at old maps last night and the road was changed to Lady Lane between 1923 and early 1930s. That is also the exact incident I've been researching. John Twigger killed his sister Mary Ann "Polly" Twigger at the address. I've been researching people at my local cemetery in Windmill Road. Do you know if any pictures of the address exist at all ? Thank you everybody for all of your help.

Hi Phil, Thank you for your response. I don't suppose a photograph exists of the house when your uncle lived there ? It'd be great to see it Smile

Hi Helen, Thank you for your response, I really appreciate it. I'm basically researching people buried at Windmill Rd Cemetery, and one of the stories I've come across was of the Twigger family. I've been trying to nail down where the address was, and find a photograph of the address if possible. All the info everyone has shared has already been really helpful and I can't thank you all enough.

Hi Nathh, and thank you for your grateful responses, much appreciated. Big grin Earlier today I changed this topic's title from Longford to Foleshill in the (probably wrong) assumption that it was the original Canal Road farther south, as pointed out by philex31. However, if you are indeed researching the house in the street now renamed Lady Lane, than I can revert the title - although this will also, of course, mean that the photos used earlier in this thread are no longer relevant.

Hi Rob, yes it does look like it is the now Lady Lane. Does anybody know where abouts the house would have been today ? I think one of the articles talking about the murder stated it wasn't far from the old post office, so would it have been somewhere near where the shop is today ? Thanks again to everyone for their help Smile
