Coventry's lost Subways / Underpasses

Not as in subway trains of course, but the walkways under the city streets. I can remember 2 that we have lost. The first being of course outside Fishy Moores in Pool Meadow. As a younger person than I am now, remember all the coach firms' shops (I mean sheds) - well they were wooden - on one side of the road, before the bus station, and the shops like Fishy Moores and the Bridal shop on the end on the other side. Let's see if anyone remembers where the other one was? Baz

Trinity Street, Hertford Street and the Butts Road all had subways. The last mentioned has been filled with styrofoam but is otherwise intact for future generations to discover.

Thanks, Trinity Street was the one I was thinking of. Did it have a shoe repair shop on the Owen Owen side in the subway, or was that in the basement of Owen Owen?

Broadgate had 2 subways, the one under Hertford St, under the Godiva clock, and the one from Owen Owen under Trinity St.

Sorry Adrian, might be showing my youth here, I can't remember the one under the Godiva clock at all. Where did that one go to?

In my day it was the basement of Owen Owen.

Inside the Hertford street subway. The ramp shown in Midland Red's photo was also connected to the stairs that were directly opposite the entrance to Broadgate House. The other side of the road the stairs were opposite James Walkers. Hertford Street was one of the busiest streets in the city centre until they blocked it off to traffic. You took your life in your hands if you tried to cross it, other than by the subway.

This looks like Fairfax St, strangely, I don't remember them being here. 1960s or 70s I would guess.

I remember this underpass well. I certainly used it in the 1970's to get to and from Pool Meadow
