What and where was "The Quadrant"? I am finding references to it in the 1870's and 1880's.

Funny you should mention. Following the recent threads on the Britain from Above photos and houses around St Patricks Road/to the station etc. I actually drove up there this afternoon. Unless you have reason to I've not really been up Manor House Drive/St Patricks Road for ages. It's interesting to try to pick out where the old roads were severed when the ring road went in. Anyway along there I noticed The Quadrant Club at the back of the solicitors. I used to work for the Council at the Law Courts and the Quadrant Club was one of the great places to meet post Christmas dinner. Full of solicitors/Council workers and policemen. Then it'd be on to the Police Ball at the Colin Campbell. Never seen so many people
 during the afternoon!

The writer, Angela Brazil, used to live in the Quadrant at one stage.

Angela Brazil
She moved to 1 The Quadrant, Coventry in 1911, with her brother and they were joined by her sister Amy upon their mother's death in 1915. Brazil became a well-known figure in the local area.
She was well known in Coventry high society as a hostess and threw parties for adults, with a greater number of female guests, at which children's food and games were featured. She had no children of her own but also hosted many parties for children.
She read widely and collected early children's fiction; her collection is now in Coventry library. She took great interest in local history and antiquities, and also involved herself in charity work. She was an early conservationist, taking an interest in both the preservation of land and monuments, worked for the City of Coventry Cathedral and the Y.W.C.A, and was a founding member of the City Guild.
She never married.

As an old, very old, Coventrian I was surprised to see on Dutchman's map the courts running off Union St. I am totally unable to recall them. What a contrast between the affluence of those living in The Quadrant to the poverty of those living in the courts only a few yards away. Les

Having just 'sold up' I've had several trips to a solicitor in the Quadrant, over the last two months. I'm bemused as to why it's called a 'quadrant'.

The far end of The Quadrant used to house the YMCA. I remember this as the building where the Centre Chess Club used to meet.

We demolished the YMCA building many years ago, and I often wonder why, because it seemed to be a sound old building to me. Any idea what was built in its place?
