Has anyone seen / got a picture of the Samson and Lion public house in Swanswell Place (Swanswell Terrace) please. According to the Real Ales website, it closed in October '67.

Foxcote. Why does pub pic 2 look so different to the others? Maybe it was re-built sometime, yes?

Afternoon, NormK Well, the windows on the side look the same and the roof. Maybe we can find some planning applications, the houses to the right look interesting too.

The pub will have been given the then-popular mock-Tudor look in the 1930s so will not appear in planning records.
The weavers' cottages to the right were obviously pictured in the 1940s as they have been gutted by incendiary bombs and must have been demolished shortly afterwards.

Picture 2 of the old pub reminded me very much of the old doctors surgery nearby on the corner of Cook Street. Having originally lived in White Street until 1947 we continued to use this doctors before it too moved to the new surgery on the corner of Stoney Stanton Road and Howard Street [now also replaced!]. The old surgery was very similar to the pub - double fronted, small front garden with garden gate and must have been built about the same time [mid 19th century?].
The doctors when I was a lad included Hamilton, Weir and Hall

That was the chemist with the clock on the corner, they incorporated the old clock into the new building and the last time I saw it it looked a bit worse for wear, is the clock still there?

I recall Dr Weir being a bluff Scotsman who I do believe had been a naval surgeon, Dr Hamilton being rather a large gentleman who whilst attending me in my bed suffering from pneumonia, struggling up the stairs, sitting on the edge of the bed out of breath preaching to me about the dangers of smoking, then dosing me up with M and B tablets. That was many years ago, to say how many would give my age away.
