Does anybody have any stories on the above club? This was a regular haunt of mine during the late 60's early 70's.

John Reeve used to own The Forty Thieves way back in the day.
I knew him in the early 90s as he was very good friends with my fiancee's parents. Good bloke, well minted but as sound as anything. He was living in the American Virgin Islands at the time and we used to see him when he was back over here. He also competed for the American Virgin Islands in the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988 when he was well into his forties or fifties. Quite a fellow.

Yes John Reeve did own The Forty Thieves, he also owned The Captains Table on Primrose Hill St. I didn't know him myself although I did go to school with his brother, whose first name I can't recall now.

Well you were on the ball with membership No2 and a cost of one guinea. I hope you enjoyed the place as much as I did.

It looks like "02" were only the first two digits, the rest of the membership number appears to be covered up

I believe it also became the first place in Coventry to have a gay night once a month (late seventies I think)

I remember The Forty Thieves from walking past it on my way home from school back in the late 60's, early 70's. I never set foot in the place as, along with the Top Spot, it had a pretty dreadful reputation. Having read a book penned by a doorman when it became Busters, I think I made the right decision!

A friend of mine tells the tale of when Shirley Bassey appeared at the Forty Thieves in cabaret and how she sat on his knee whilst she was singing 'Hey Big Spender'.

Remember it as Fingles Cave and when "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown" set fire to cave roof (roofing insulation) with his burning crown

Well you don't know what you missed, and it's not always a good thing to believe all you read or what you are told.

Well I guess it's all a matter of opinion, but I really don't think I've missed out on much by never going to the Forty Thieves or the Top Spot!
