I'm sure someone will have the answer to that puzzle! And which building in the row is the Sword and Mace, or had it gone by this time? There's always more questions than answers! We need a map with the yard names on! I was hoping that there might be a photo posted of the junction of Bayley Lane / Earl Street looking north, showing the left hand side buildings, but it seems it's even rarer than Palace Yard.

The Fire Insurance map 5 shows the relevant section. Starting on the right (east end) at number 38 and the passageway you've got the Coventry Technical Institute. Then the Dragoon cycle shop at 39. Then the Palace Yard number 40. Then the Herald Printing Office/bookshop at 41 and a passage way (first on the sketch). Then there is a shop 42 and the archway to the Sword And Mace with Court 3 (I would like images of those). The building with the 11 windows etc is R A Dalton & Co, a ribbon manufacturer at number 46 and 47.

moriarty. Rob has this one if that's the same area you were after - Bayley Lane looking towards Earl Street (I've enlarged for clarity, Rob!) Looking at map comparison I think that may be the very left hand edge of the Palace Yard building in the distance!

On the 1911 census no 42 was John Young, Butcher and 43 Richard Hamilton, sign Maker. It then jumps to 48 so 46 and 47 may have just been business premises.

The end of Bayley lane is further east (the Palace Yard is some buildings to the right of that photo Neil). St Mary's Street looks at the archway to the Technical Institute and to the left of that (missing even the cycle shop depending upon where the photo was taken). As Anne writes 42 was a butcher's and had been for many years. On the map 44 was Offices and 45 a shop.

moriarty said on post 63 that the photo was looking south not north but that was not possible (the slope) but why isn't the archway Palace Yard, Helen, and if not, what yard is it?

Thanks Neil for the Bayley Lane shot post 93. Do you think the last building on the right (looking south) is on the corner of Bayley Lane? Or would there be one more before Earl St? This would also be opposite the Star. Helen post 92, yes, I see the sign (Sword and Mace) on post 75, but where is this pub in relation to Prof's photo post 74? The sign (Earl Street) on post 63 of course would be put there (as with most signs) at the junction of the roads so this would probably be St Mary St opposite.

Moriarty is right, that picture in post 63 is looking south (as is Neil's and both of the Prof's). The way I know is because Neil's advert says that the Dragoon cycle company is at number 39, which I know was east of the Palace Yard at number 40 by looking at the Fire Insurance maps. On the same map I know that the building to the left of the cycle shop and the archway (as you look south) is The Coventry Technical Institute at number 38. I know what the Palace Yard looked like from the outside and that newspaper image isn't it.

I believe that there was another building at the end of Bayley Lane that is hidden by the tall factory. That is an area with few images. As for the Sword and Mace, I think that it's hidden behind the front row. Only the roof of Court 3 is visible. See Insurance map.

Although a courtyard view - Earl St (north side) is just visible through the archway! Perhaps Neil could enlarge?

I know what my Grandad Kendall's response would be Moriarty: "Well I never...!" If only we could read the lettering above the window!

Helen. The slope of the road makes it on the south side, not the north side The photo on 63 has the Dragoon shop on it, and I can't think of one on each side of the road. so I am right. Several times Prof has put a repeat photo on, so we bear with it. Helen, now the photo with name Earl Street, next to the courtyard, was I believe the start of Earl Street, if I remember rightly, in the old times?

Kaga, I wonder if you misread Helen and Moriaty's posts? They both did say the Dragoon shop photos were looking south, therefore the shop and Palace Yard were on the south side.
