Midland Red, I am pretty certain that just inside Palmer Lane from the Trinity Street end was called Bulls Yard, complete with a bull post and I believe a horse trough, early thirties?

Reading that link, I wonder if there were any records of specific hits of bombs and Trinity Street and how Butcher Row and LBR would have fared if the council hadn't got them first?

From a map I saw recently, it looked like two high explosives fell on or very near Trinity Street - one about half way down and the other near the bottom, where Sainbury's now stands. That might've given us hope that Butcher Row and surrounding streets could've survived - however, the map didn't list (and, realistically speaking, couldn't) the tens of thousands of incendiary devices that were scattered around, so there's a fair chance that those lovely old wooden properties would've gone up like.... well, wooden things in a fire! The buildings that replaced the top of Butcher Row and Cross Cheaping were heavily damaged. Had there not been as many brick and steel buildings even the Lych Gate Cottages might have gone.

Thanks to you all for reminding me of those pictures I had forgotten them. Yard, ring, it was the same area, as a kid I often ran into that area when shopping with the elders. Plenty of places to hide.

The exciting times of shopping in Coventry. Coventry was laid out better, or seemed to be when I was a kid. Get off the tram, top of Broadgate, down Butcher Row, across Bull Ring, across Burges to the Co-op, then into the covered market, up Smithford Street to Broadgate and the tram home. Remember one Sat morning going with dad into town, to Burges, there was a large shop that sold cobblers' 'stuff', dad bought some squares of leather to do our shoes, he also bought a load of tacks, the salesman weighed them out, then put them in an old cocoa tin we had brought for that purpose, I dropped the tin and there were tacks strewn all over the floor, a teenage lad appeared and swept them to one side, the salesman weighed out a fresh lot, no one got uptight, this time I held on to them tight, all the way to Highfield Road, watched the game, then walked across to Red Lane, down Stoney Stanton to Roses Garage where we had left our bikes, cycled home, still clutching the cocoa tin (I was about 6/7 years of age).
