Hello Phil. Just rejoined the site after some 7 years, was previously logged in as Warwick40 but could not remember old email supplier config so now signed in as 8 Nuffield Road which is where I used to live four thousand years ago... or so it seems. Did you know anyone in that street? Mrs Sanderson was my next door neighbour, had Griffins shop, post office etc
Hi. I knew a couple of folk in Nuffield Rd, Boughtons, from the fifties, & Rowe from the eighties. That's about all.

Hello, The Big Entry. That name bought back memories. I think that refers to a gap, quite a substantial gap, in the parade of houses on the Bell Green Road located midway between Roses Garage and the shops at the end of that terrace going towards Proffitt Avenue? It was more or less opposite what we used to call "The Big Trees" two of them on the opposite side of the road, which we used to play on with a rope hanging down which we swung on. I diverse, sorry. When I think about it that gap must have had houses on it which I think must have been demolished leaving a gap/entry, quite a big entry enabling me to cut through to the parallel road where my friend lived. Cheers, Keith

Hi, I'm not familiar with this area but there might be aerial shots. I'd point you to something suitable if it exists but I'm not sure what land marks to look for. Britain From Above Foxcote hasn't posted in some time.

Not really sure of the date but I believe the Morris was first in Courthouse Green in 1927 on a very small scale, it was nearer 1930 that it really became a work-force, now the only entrance in that area in those days was the space couple of houses from Proffitt Ave. Four big houses stood facing the common, but there was a wide entrance between the two pairs, that led down to a cottage that stood in a garden among two or three fruit trees - this cottage belonged to George Randle, my uncle. We visited regular during the thirties. It has been posted several times on this forum. Hope this helps.

Anyone remember that massive oak tree that disappeared when they did the A444 route? Not far past the newsagents (Wards) in the 70's?

I lived opposite that oak tree for eleven years so I remember it well. Also in the photo the other two oak trees lower down, where now stands Longfield House, are the three horse chestnut trees, still there in what was the Morris sports ground? I was a regular visitor to those trees in the autumn of 1940/50s to the annoyance of the groundsman.

Brilliant photo, Heathite, the houses I referred to were behind the tree close to Sewall Highway. Before 1930 you can see it was all fields from the railway to Henley Road.

Does this make sense Kaga? I've rotated the map to make Bell Green Road parallel to line of sight.

Heathite, Yes, I do believe the red brick house in the picture was a block of four with the entrance between them, the trees between those two houses would be the orchard, there was only iron railings in front of the red brick houses in those days but it's been over 80 years ago. Fantastic piece of work on your part Thank You.

I lived behind that lovely cottage on Bell Green Road in flats at Stuart Court, which was built approx 1971. I distinctly remember Hyde the Butcher (now Kaffee and Kream hairdressers) and Colombos the grocers (2 stunning daughters) When I lived there, the cottage had a Manx cat.

Sid Hyde sold pork batches on Friday and Saturday nights. They were ten pence each. He did a stuffing batch for threepence, 50s/early 60s prices. The other two shops were Blue Chain greengrocers and Worthingtons general shop. Sid had a farm some way past Coombe Abbey. There was a large cottage in the orchard Kaga mentioned. It was empty by the early 60s and had been vandalised somewhat. A couple of lads from Proffitt Avenue were in there when it collapsed.

I moved to Courthouse Green School aged 9 from Wood End Juniors and my first meeting came with the dreaded Miss Hasten when she announced to everyone that I was a liar as I had the audacity to claim that I had read The Hobbit - apparently someone from Wood End could not possibly have read such a difficult book! The first class I was in was Upper 3 - Mrs (Miss) Mattingley's class where she tried to get me to write with my right hand not the left! However on moving up to Upper 4 and Mr Batt's class it was refreshing to be encouraged to read a wide range of literature and also take pride in my achievements - he certainly helped me believe I could get my dream job - a few bumps along the way but I hope he'd be proud to know I teach special needs. Thanks also go to a very inspirational teacher who really did show how fulfilling it is to teach special needs - Mrs Duffy from Deedmore Special School (now a housing estate!!) My parents still live in Elgar Road and have just celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary - celebrations after all this has cooled down. As I no longer live in Coventry it would be good to hear from any others who also went to Courthouse Green, Wood End or Lyng Hall.
I was born in 1946 and went to Courthouse Green from 1951 and then on to Lyng Hall after the 11 plus. I have just found this forum and it has brought back many memories. I remember strict Miss Hasten, sweet Mrs Major and scary Mr Batt. We lived in Shuttle Street, a short walk to the back gate of the school but the walk to Lyng Hall took a lot longer I remember. I left Coventry when I started physio training and returned only to visit family. I moved to Norway in 1970 and tho' we spend a lot of time in the UK since retiring I haven't been to Coventry for many years.
