Stoney Stanton Road

Hi all, would anyone have any information or pictures of a grocery shop and bakehouse at 476a Stoney Stanton Road, Foleshill, my ancestors "The Olivers" had their shop there from about 1860 until at least 1911. Thomas Oliver and then his son John Oliver ran it. Many thanks in advance,

The Stoney Stanton Road I knew: From St Paul's (Rd) down to Priestleys (Bridge) then to the Station (St) off the Cross (St) across to Stable (canal) now a Carpenters shop into Eden (St) along Paradise (Row) to see Adam and Eve (pub) wander by Courthouse (Green) and the Old Church (Rd) listen to the Prophets (Ave) of Bell Green .

Hi Walrus and all. Reading all the above brings back some memories. My family lived at 4 Tallants Road - one of my brothers, now deceased, David was the other person who the derelict house fell on with Paul Beasley. It was front page news in the Coventry Telegraph, 60s. He was helped out of the rubble by a neighbour whose son I believe was hiding up a tree nearby because he was frightened of getting in trouble. He was with Paul and David, Mrs O'Keefe got my brother out unscathed but Paul suffered a fractured skull. Lots of great memories, remember the weavers houses, terraced 3 storeys high, we used to play in them, find the occasional tramp, made us run like hell. Good old days.

Hello Les, your surname isn't Wood is it? I knew a Georgie Wood who lived in Tallants Road. The Beasley kids suffered more than their fair share of ill luck. Jimmy, I think, lost an eye when a dart rebounded from the board. Yet another was injured while playing with an air gun. Little Paul drowned in the canal. Maybe the rest of us were simply lucky because most of us got up to some pretty adventurous stuff that most kids now wouldn't dream of. I remember well supplying a tramp who was hiding out in those cottages just past The Weavers pub with sandwiches. He claimed the police were looking for him so we all thought he was pretty glamorous.

Coventry Evening Telegraph - Saturday 16 February 1963. One Frees Himself A two-story brick cottage at the rear of some shops in Bell Green Road, Courthouse Green, collapsed this afternoon in a cloud of dust, trapping two boys who had been playing in the building. David Wood, aged 10, of 4, Tallants Road, who was pinned down by a heavy beam which lay across his chest, and Paul Beasley (9), of 23, Proffitt Avenue, who was also knocked down by falling debris, were both detained in Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital with head injuries. David was dragged clear by a neighbour, Mr. Tom Evans, of 11, Tallants Road, after the alarm had been raised by 13 years old Jacqueline Clamp, of 17, Tallants Road. Jacqueline saw the house collapse after the boys had been hitting the walls with iron bars. Paul managed to free himself and run off before the arrival of firemen, ambulancemen and police. The house, which had been empty for about six months and was awaiting demolition, is believed to be about 150 years old. Mrs. Annie Walker, of 8, Tallants Road, also helped in the rescue of David. She told a reporter of "The Coventry Evening Telegraph": I was cleaning my bedroom windows when I heard a terrible crash and saw a cloud of dust. I ran through a neighbour's garden and nearly jumped the fence at the end. As I helped release David I saw his little white face." Nine years old Patrick O'Keefe, of 21, Tallants Road, who was nearby when the cottage collapsed, said: "I saw them playing near the wall." After the crash I went to get my mother." Mrs. O'Keefe assisted in the rescue operations. Mr. A. Leese, Coventry's Chief Fire Officer, said afterwards that everyone had done a good job. Neighbours, men and women alike, had worked hard. "Sometimes we had too much help," he said. Operations were controlled by Police Supt. J. W. Walker. Firemen later demolished the remaining walls of the house, which neighbours said had been in a dilapidated condition for some years. At one time about a score of people were tearing at tumbled beams and masonry, looking to see if any other children were beneath the ruins. It had at first been thought that three or four boys were under the rubble. Just over 18 months ago, in July 1961, Paul Beasley's younger brother, David, aged four, was drowned when he fell into the Coventry Canal in Old Church Road, Foleshill.

Thank you for posting the Coventry Telegraph story, I was only just turned six years old at the time, but remember it so well. Could I request a copy of the front page from the accident!! I remember seeing the cutting complete with photo, unfortunately we cannot find it, must have been lost or deteriorated with age. Kind regards, Les Wood.

Hi Walrus. Yes I am a Wood I had 4 elder brothers, Reg, George, John, David, sadly all passed away at early ages, then there was Peter, Joan, me and my little sister Linda. Dad was Reg, mum was Joan. I remember John was a butcher, Reg worked for a wholesale company then on to Marks and Spencer's. Not sure what job George was doing!! David was in the building trade, he worked with two Jamaican brothers who I believe owned a builders yard where the Mosque is now! We moved from Coventry after our dad passed away in 1972. Some great memories on here. Thanks all.

This picture above is the cottage I posted on 7 of this topic, I knew it well for something like 15 years. It was rented by my aunt and uncle. The only way I knew to get to it was down an alley between the houses on Bell Green Road. The cottage was surrounded by a well kept lawn with a couple of apple trees. My aunt had a couple of boys born about the early 1920's - we all played together there, with the Rose boys. They were both into the forces at the beginning of the war. The younger one came home shot to pieces and parts missing, the elder I don't think made it back. My aunt, my dad's sister, could not stay in the cottage where the boys had played so happily, and moved sometime in the fifties to Thrupp near Oxford. Their name was Randle. The Friday morning after the blitz, dad and I cycled to that cottage to see if they were ok. We then went on to Roses Garage, another sister of my dad's - they too had two boys the same age. The last time I saw the eldest he had done about ten ops over Germany with Bomber Command. I lost touch with them all from then onwards.

Is this anywhere near being correct regarding the long entry on Bell Green Road?

Heathite. Yes, I believe so, there was only one entry as I remember. I never knew how they numbered those cottages. Thank you.

Can anyone say whether this is Ford Street? I think the railings just might be of Wheatley Street School where my dad went and I had to go there from Folly Lane to sit the 11plus examination! If it isn't maybe it should go on a trams posting?
