Midland Red, you lucky devil, you ever see the sweet rations we had, lol. I was twelve years old, and worked week-ends and holidays delivering milk. War came, and most houses placed a bucket of sand close to the front doors (use on incendiary), so teenage girls left notes under them, boys friends would pick up the notes on the way to work, or place notes, regular occurrence. Some pretty sights first thing in the morning.

There was a grocery warehouse at the end of Foleshill Road near the basin, opposite side to the canal, early fifties, fire brigade made little impression, gutted.

Was there a shoe shop namely Englands in the city centre somewhere, maybe the 60's early 70's I am thinking of the Precinct? I thought I knew them all but can't place that one.

Question

Yes I remember a shoe shop called England's Dreamtime but like you I can't remember where it was although the lower precinct is ringing a slight bell. Cheers

Kaga - are you thinking of Laxons for the grocery warehouse? Used to supply the VG shops, Booker bought them out.

There was certainly a Sainsbury's shop in Trinity Street, opposite the site of the present store. It was the second shop up from Palmer Lane, part of what now appears on Google Street Maps as Remploy. I remember the store well from my childhood in the late 50s/early 60s as my mother went there once or twice a week. It was an old-fashioned tiled shop with marble counters along both sides, none of your self service there. I can recall the women prepacking butter using pats, sides of bacon hanging there and being sliced on machines, and the eggs being priced individually, sometimes including farthings in the price. I used to love the smell of the place. When Sainsbury's moved across the road, the initial shop was also counter service at the beginning, I think, before expanding into a supermarket. The old shop became Williams & Glyn's Bank which later moved to Little Park Street and eventually became RBS.

The Maypole in Gosford Street was memorable experience to me as a kid when I went there shopping with my mum religiously on a Saturday morning the smell of cheese once inside is the memory that sticks out and then on to Dewhurst butchers for the Sunday joint and then down to Garners for a pork pie for my dads work lunchbox. Thumbs up Thumbs up

As if proof was needed about Sainsburys, in Trinity St, when the shop (as Mister D-Di described), was Antics, until 2013, the blue tiled surround between walls & ceiling still had the Sainsbury motif decoration for all to see.

Now that's what I call service, thanks MR. I wonder how many there are left now and to think, I may have been into most of them.

Disorganised1, you could be right, Laxons were a big name then but I can't honestly say for sure, neither do I know what year it was, I know we were close to losing a fireman that day.

Apologies if this has been mentioned before Betty Preece (wife of Ivor Preece) Precinct by the bird cage I think Sainsburys in Trinity Street was known as what was called a Pork Butchers.
