That is a worry Tony - especially after they have cleared a lot of high rise flats in the area. Many of my students living in the vicinity have felt happier since they went! Wave

Thanks Midland Red. Oh yes, full of character, but I suppose as long as it serves a good purpose. Are the people of Coventry happy with that ? Thumbs up

Wasn't there a church in Bird Street which backed on to the Swanswell? I believe it was St Mark's, as later it became a clinic connected to the Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital, which I'm fairly sure was known as St Mark's Annexe. I had to take my father there once to see some consultant. When I was at school, the nickname for the Swanswell was the 'Indian Ocean'. Oh my

The old building is still there. My wife also used to go there to see her consultant. I do not know if it is still used by the Hospital Thumbs up

There is no hospital any more Norm, it's functions were largely taken over by the newly constructed Hillfields Health Centre. St Mark's might still be used to store old records but is boarded-up, often vandalised and looks completely abandoned to me? Likewise the few remaining hospital buildings. The latter look to me as if they could be converted to other uses but as far as I can tell are already earmarked for demolition.

This map is from 1888. The school building was later absorbed by Coventry & Warwickshire Hospital in 1914:

I believe the tower became the X-Ray department at Cov & Warwick and the rest became the nurses home.

I have been researching the octagonal building for some time now and came across these pictures of interest. Taken from English Heritage: The former outpatients' clinic and nurses' home formed part of the Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital. This was built in 1864 and completed and opened to the public in 1867, to a design by Neville and Son of Coventry. Due to a significant increase in population, work started in 1906 on the extension of the hospital which incorporated the building of the nurses' home (completed in 1907) and the outpatients' clinic (completed in 1909). These were designed by the Scottish architect Alfred Hessell Tiltman (1854-1910), who was based in London, and Herbert William Chattaway (1855-1940) of Coventry. As shown on the first edition Ordnance Survey map 1:2500, published in 1914, the two buildings flanked the main central block of the hospital which faced Stoney Stanton Road. In the late 1930s the nurses' home had been extended by three wings enclosing a square courtyard to the rear of the earlier building. During the Coventry air raids in 1940 and 1941 the main block of the hospital was destroyed, but both the outpatients' clinic and the nurses' home survived. In 1948 the hospital became part of the NHS and the Birmingham Regional Hospital's Board.
