I have recollections of a Windmill bakery in Coventry, not sure of its location though.

My mother worked at Renold Chain and walked to Pail's for lovely fresh bread every day. They also did wonderful fruit pies, a different one every day. Their strawberry & gooseberry were the best, a combination I've never seen anywhere else. After retiring she got a bus into town from Binley most days to get bread from Hunt's in Spon Street. I also recall using the Luxury Bakery in Alfall Road when I was out and about working in Coventry. There was one in Bull's Head Lane too, but I don't recall its name.

Hello MisterD-Di Wave My late housekeeper was a regular customer of both Pails's and Hunt's (we lived near both at different times). After Hunt's closed she used Gregg's in Earlsdon Street. Her favourite purchase was those flat crusty buns the size of plates which she used to make ham batches (the ham was from local cooked meat specialists as well).

Have just found this site and am having plenty of fun!!!!!!!!!!! I think I can introduce a new bakery to the forum. I am reasonably confident there was 'Slaney's Bakery' on Earlsdon Ave North. It was between Highland Road and Coniston Road. The entry to the side of the property was known by us kids as Slaney's entry, very original. It would have stopped being a bakery in the late 1940's or very early 1950's. Wave

There was a small bakery/cake shop in North Street, corner of Alliance Way. Diagonally opposite was a shop on the corner of Shakespeare St who sold domino fags to the school kids at 1.1/2d each.

Good Lord, yes! That was the bakery my mother used in the early 50s. They brought the bread - and some cakes - to the door in an old (prewar) Bedford van, painted immaculate cream with brown mudguards. Their bread was lovely! Thumbs up In later years, there was a Czech baker in Hillfields. Can't remember his name now, but his bread was very nice.

Konrad Glenz may be the baker you're remembering. His shop was a few doors away from Philips, at least until the 1970s.

Hi Foleshill Kid, Did you work on the corner of Livingstone Road and Lockhurst Lane? I served my apprenticeship opposite that shop on Lockhurst Lane and worked there for many years. Ernie Robinson attended Broad Heath School a few years before I did.

Farr & Ready supplied the buns for our Sunday school outings. My wife, typing the church magazine misquoted and stated that 'All had had a good time with plenty of buns & mild supplied by Farr & Ready. It should have read buns & milk, I am sure. No wonder they all had a good time.' Hi. Wave I wrote this about Farr & Reddy (I spelt it wrong) on a thread about bakeries during the summer. Hope you like. Best wishes. Thumbs up

Hunt's the Bakers is just out of sight on the left, but we remember it well, Stu used to go to the Co-op Funerals to cut the men's hair (the Undertaker's) and we used to go to Hunt's for the lovely bread but that was only in the 70's. However, in the late 50's/60's it was Palmer's the Pork Butchers. The hot porkpies were 10p a piece, dripping with gravy! Opposite was the Evesham Seed and Bulb Company in the 50's.
