Hi folks. With Russia likely to be pushing cyber attacks I thought I'd just mention that my Firefox browser with all cookies turned off just set off my virus protection alarm. Normally it lets nothing in. If not a problem from Firefox itself, it might have come in from an advert on probably the Daily Mail. Make sure that your virus protection is up to date, you've backed up your machine and nothing like a list passwords are kept on your machine.
Update - it turned out to be a false positive but the advice still applies. |

Beware of this - “NewProfilePic”.
I raise the matter here as I’ve seen it being used on a Facebook page, A Tribute to Nigel Boocock, before I came across the newspaper article. The image looked impressive, and followers seemed very keen to pursue the site via an app, a link to which was offered. |

Hello all
I've just discovered some emails that have gone into my spam folder over recent times. No action needed.
Just so that you know & that this can happen from time to time.

There is talk of Microsoft starting a new version of the search engine Bing in the next few weeks. The joke used to be 'what is the most searched for word on Bing - answer - Google.' I'm one of those people. I hate Bing for three reasons.
1) It's the default on Microsoft's Edge and comes with a page of news and advert junk.
2) It invariably gives the wrong top answer for a basic search like Lotto.
3) It contains a fraction of the images compared to Google.
To be fair Google has deteriorated in recent years and is heavily biased towards commercial answers rather than accuracy and unless things are regularly updated they become impossible to find. I have to keep very long lists of bookmarks in order to find stuff that I spotted easily in the past. Amazon went the same way and now I rarely buy books from it because I can't find books they've got, even if I type the full name and author. I'm reduced to using the ISBN.
The new search is said to be using an advanced artificial intelligence but my worry is that the emphasis will be on its ability to answer like a human rather than get me the specific link I'm looking for. One of the reasons that I was never attracted to Alexa is because the emphasis is on ease of use rather than my choices. The problem for us is that the emphasis will always be towards big corporations trying to sell us stuff. It all risks the best part of the internet - being a fount of knowledge. Anyway, fingers crossed for the new Bing being better than the old one. |

There is an old text scam on mobile phones where a 'relative' claims to have lost their own phone and need you to pay a bill or send them money electronically. The obvious thing to do if you worry it's real is to ring the relative's real phone but what if they don't respond? There's a new risk. People have been rung up by AI generated voices built from a person's genuine relative or friends. The voices are generated from even short recordings on the internet and or may even be created from an unsolicited phone call. These cases are even more sinister because they pretend that the missing relative has been kidnapped. So it might be a good idea to discuss a few security questions and answers with those you'd send money to if you thought they were in trouble. Make it something that you haven't already published on Facebook. You probably won't need them but you'll be glad if you do. |

I have had so many scam texts and email over the past months that it is quite easy to ignore them now. They must sell a standard scam email to people who think we are all fools. If I had claimed all the prizes I have won I would be rich. Every few days I get told me cloud is full. As I type I have just bee told again that my Mcafee account will be closed, it has already been closed time after time and considering I never had one in the first place ! It is no good trying to block them as they are all headed differently. They are so easy to spot. so I just delete. I have also had that text Helen, several times, so often you know its a scam. |

Yes indeed.
I'm not mindful like I should be when I'm posting light hearted beans on toast recipes, because it's joking apart, the pre-internet world era that I grew up in.
I called in to my local hairdressers whilst waiting for the bus, asking if they cut hair. Like asking our brilliant chippy, if they sell chips with their fish.
Oh, here he comes!
I hope that I don't get caught in any malicious scam, or the legal but, hair brain schemes that rip folk off. They can be more problematic in total lost cost.
"Hello Madam, your roof is leaking, leave it to us" or "Good afternoon Sir. We have a wonderful investment scheme here. Just sign, we'll do the rest"
A bit later, your house has gone or been sold!! |

Hi Prof, if you are copying newspaper articles I find the easiest way, on a PC you should have a clipping tool to just copy the article, on an iPad which I mostly use you can print the screen, select what you want and save it to pictures. |
