I believe that it might be ILIFFE & Sons. There's a picture of Smithford Street by Sydney Bunney that seems to show the same building and you can read the sign on the front.

Osmiroid, there's a Sydney Bunney picture showing the Theatre Vaults on the right hand edge but he doesn't show a sign like the one above but it's maybe too small? The main sign is a big letter sign running across the building. Even that is too small but it looks like black lettering on a white background. If you've got the Bunney book, look for Smithford Street and a jettied building with the pub just to the right. It was a red brick building with yellow brownish lower front (wood?). There was a big lantern over the door.

I've no idea of the colour scheme, but the sign can be seen in this cropped postcard on the Pub website.

Looks like red, according to this website Thumbs up

Duh! I keep forgetting that they pushed the frontage back before the war. I'll go stand in the corner and think about what I've done wrong. Sad Lol

Hi Osmiroid. This is a sign for another pub on the Atkinson's site and I agree with MR that most of their signs are predominantly red. I see on a picture on Google with the sign showing next to Woolworths that the background is dark and the words in white.

Thanks everyone Smile The red one was my starting point and I changed it to blue and added the name. I could see that the actual pub sign has light and dark inverted so I didn't want to say it was definitely any particular colour. Helen, I am not aware of what the Sydney Bunney picture is, unless I saw it somewhere else?

The Bunney painting is based on the pub before the road was widened. I'm fairly sure that it is in the Bunney book but I can't find my copy right now.

Here it is Helen/Osmiroid but I don't think there is much to see on it. Not sure about copyright so if you want delete it afterwards Helen.

At that time the Vaults was the building on the right.

All these vaults and cellars were built because of the freemen's rights to stop buildings on land so the people dug down on what they had, and so to tell people where they were, they made more and better signs.

The Herbert (so (c) to them) just added this one to their Facebook page. Interesting to see so I have zoomed in a bit as you do not often get that section on the southeast side in as good a view. Helen, I was hoping to spot the entrance to Vicar Lane but it must have only been a small passageway. Post copied from topic Vicar Lane on 8th Jul 2021 5:39 pm

Neil, Any chance of knowing who the image belongs to on the (looks like a white pillar) the left of your picture? Above the sign BOOT.
