Spon Street

Didn't realise they were the same ones Helen - Cheers again.

It's not obvious that they're the same. What I've wondered was when the mods happened to fill in the jetties to give the appearance they had before the war. The building that would have been in the foreground in your photo if it hadn't been destroyed by bombing was much more in the medieval style. Ironically the city survived so long intact because it had been largely built in the medieval era, with big timbers and then had remained because the city was too poor to modernise. That was especially true of Spon Street.

A new mystery Court location to be spotted please Cov-lovers (that means you Helen! ) - This one has turned up on FB. Just labelled as Spon St. I know it could be one of many but it's fun hunting.

Also going back to Prof post #373 of Court 6 (it was No.17) earlier I had no idea - mainly because it was thought apart from the Watch Museum section and the lack of rear access - that part of Court 6 is actually still there!

It was fun hunting Neil and a new one for me. It's the end of Court 37, north side of Spon Street, behind the Lamb and Flag (pointing north east). Some time between 1889 and 1906 if the maps are right. Like many photos it might have been taken just before they knocked it down. I almost didn't see it as I was looking at the then and now. Funny how perspective changes with modern cameras.

Helen you are amazingly clever! With that info to hand then this must have been Court 37's entrance -

That's the right archway, yes. It's getting easier because there are less gaps to fill in. Just like a really fun jigsaw. Keep 'em coming.

So happy to see photos of 37 court, I lived in 16 17 house, part of each house made into 1 house, opposite there was one other house in which rag and bone men lived. Of course they were slums but they were the happiest days of my child hood for 11 years, thank you so much for bringing back wonderful memories, I love this site. Sally

Hi Sally - did you mean Court 6? I think as Helen was saying and looking at maps, Court 37 did not last long into the 20th century.

Neil, while the central building in the photo was knocked down, most of Court 37 survived until the war. In 1950, 1, 16 and 17 still survived, although they aren't in the picture. That'll put the rag and bone men at number 1. I think I wrote before that there's a photo from height of what survived the war in John Ashby's book about Spon Street (I highly recommend). It might appear in the Britain From Above pictures too. The plot shape looks unchanged on the 1950 map and there may have been the ghosts of former buildings on the ground. Even in the 70s there were remnants from the war up and down the country - I played amongst what turned out to include an unexploded bomb and several hand grenades. Glad Neil found something for you Sally - you only had to wait decades and 2 years.

Spot on Helen, my address was 37 court 16, 17 house, Spon Street, Coventry. There were left over ruins of outside toilets, and a wash house that my uncle, a keen fisherman, used to put his live catch in. And yes, a big thanks to Neil for a fantastic photograph!
