Back to History. A vicar named Marston was preaching in St Michael's Church from the text "Be sober, and watch, for the end of all things is at hand" when to the amazement of the congregation, as he was uttering the last words a thunderbolt fell on the spire, causing some stone work to fall on the roof. The noise so dreadfully alarmed the congregation that they thought the day of judgement had arrived. In Nov 1738 a man fell from the battlements of the church and died two days later. (Had he been in my mob, we would have sang they scraped him off the tarmac like a plate off strawberry jam, glory glory hallelujah.)

Project to conserve Coventry's 5,000 stained-glass fragments. The pieces were stored next to the cathedral's boiler! Jay Williams

St Michael's spire from the South (with decaying buildings?) Could this be from Castle Yard, looks like St Mary's on the right? Forum library image

Nice find Prof - I think you could be right. Helen, could this be taken from the open land in front of Earl Street before the Council House was built?

Yes this is looking from Earl Street over the demolition for the Council House and on to the area between the backs of Hay Lane and St Mary's.

I often think I must go about with my eyes wide shut. Although I had taken the picture that includes this frieze earlier in the year I had not looked at it closely until today. It is from the east end of the south side exterior.

I'm continuously surprised that I find stuff I never saw before, no matter how hard I've looked. I'm beginning to think the gargoyles move stuff around to confuse me. Lol
