The first Indian restaurant I went to was in about 1978. It was called The Curry Bowl and was in Hertford Street just down the steps from W H Smith. The other Indian restaurants I remember from around this time were the Raj/Rajpoot in Cross Cheaping, another in the Lower Precinct of which I can't remember the name and The Shimla opposite the Station. The Royal Bengal then opened in the early eighties in Albany Road and became our go to restaurant. I still visit there when I'm back in town.

Hi. I remember the Swiss Alps restaurant because I got my first job there when I left school in 1975. We had to wear Swiss uniforms. My job was to clear the tables. It didn't last long because they said I didn't smile enough. I don't know what happened to it.

Was the Laronde the one at the top of Albany Road near the Candy Shop? If so, it was still open in the mid 70's.

I seem to remember the place, with a sign in fancy lettering that read La Ronde, somewhere in Earlsdon Street or Albany Road. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thought it was at the top of Albany Rd. It was originally opened by my stepfather's friend when I was a child many moons ago!!!

Swiss Alps first opened in 1971, set up by Croatian businessman Ivan Polancec and his Spanish wife. They brought outfits from Switzerland for the waitresses I believe! I think the original restaurant was in the shop unit below C & A? Ivan had an eccentric house built in Eastern Green reflecting his eclectic tastes! Thanks for all the memories folks! If you wish to get in touch with some more, I'm preparing a fun book on nightlife in Cov in 1970s so do mail me.
