Having just read the history of the town on 'Wikipedia'. The following statement is made. "Church Street is the location of the town's pillory and whipping post, which were last used in 1863." Could the current location of the pillory (and whipping post) be its original site with the house being built behind, after it fell out of use?

The system should bring them back and teach the offensive morons a few lessons. A lot to be learned just to look at them. Roll eyes

Many thanks for that, MR, but being pelted with stones, brick ends and dead rats!! The brick ends alone conjure thoughts of terrible injuries being inflicted!

Ahhh! But if I recall correctly discipline was different them. "Get down from there or I'll give you a thick ear", and back then, that is exactly what would have happened.

Just a black look from my father was enough for me, Robthu. I hope you haven't suffered with your ears since. Roll eyes

Morning all - My friend Gray Forster recently posted this one on FB stating it's Hill Street though I'm not aware of anything like it there that I have seen before? The 'lane' looks too wide to be a passageway to a Court itself - Any ideas anyone?

It's from a book though I can't remember offhand which one. It's post war and mid demolition so there's an odd mix of buildings. It's Whitefriars Lane as it leads up to Gosford Street. The Black Lion/Post Office had been demolished but the rest hadn't been cleared, so the whiteish, gabled wall you see on the right of centre would originally be hidden by the pub. You can pick out the flat roofed building at the bottom of this slide. The building beyond and to the right of it had been reduced to 1 storey.

It threw me for a few minutes because while I remembered that it was Whitefriars Lane it doesn't look like the older pictures because of the damage.

I can see what you mean Prof. There were stretches of the north side of Well Street that looked like that before they built the Gas showroom but I'm reasonably sure that it's Whitefriars Lane after the war.
