Thank you MR, I guess it was pretty awful, Thanks for the pointer - someone must have liked it. It`s really the `throw away` society angle that gets me All the capital invested in public buildings used to mean they were good for centuries - you don`t necessarily have to like them

I hate to say it but in most circumstances, Preservation must give way to Progress - no matter what the cost and whoever pays!

I've never seen it other than with Spire House, but I did always feel that it would make a fantastic centrepiece for a square on that site (to replace Bull Yard) if it were opened up and the trees removed for smaller shrubs and bushes. This demolition has just reinforced this opinion. Maybe even include the outline of where the rest of the church was using paving materials? Straightening the route of Greyfriars Lane would start to create a better link between all three spires and create a node of New Union St, Warwick Road, Hertford St and Greyfriars Lane, with the square also being able to be used by the bar as an extended outdoor seating area. Then the pool could have still been built just ever so slightly to the east (though I still think there would have been better sites)

Here's a few images from today, outside Whitefriars Church where digging was going on. You can see the remains of a large column that the archaeologist said was going to be recovered and displayed at a later date outside 'The Wave'. The archaeologist very kindly snapped these images from within the fenced of area.

Well done on the great pictures. I think you mean Greyfriars? I'm always mixing the two up. Christchurch was a 'new' one built on the remains of the original Greyfriars which was destroyed at Henry VIII's command. That then makes sense because old pillars wouldn't be on top of brick if they were the original Greyfriars. Only the spire survived above ground but there may be old wall bases under the brick, which may have been placed to bolster the medieval remains?
