Hertford Street

The police box looks like the one that was outside the public urinals at the top of Alma St where the roundabout is now. Just to the left of the door is where the 999 phone was. They were a main police box with a desk and large log book inside, only ever had the privilege of being escorted into one once when I was caught on top of the Glass factory roof.

Kaga. That type of kiosk (police box) was introduced during the mid-20's. It is just one of the 58 there were in the city. What you can see in the photo is a side view, the door is not in shot.

CovPoliceHistory I hoped you would come in, so was it a police box? And did some police wear flat caps in those days? Thanks, Kaga.

Kaga. I noticed the flat cap later, so you are probably right, not a policeman, maybe just a passer-by. The police box I recognised as like the Binley Road one on the corner of Church Lane in Stoke. I lived a few yards from it.

I see from the post above, you have confirmation that it is a Police box. Whilst the type of box often seen in a popular TV show was made of concrete, those we had in this City were of a wooden construction. With the exception of one, that was built into the wall of the car park that once stood fronting Fairfax Street. I do have a couple of group photographs of the force and in some, a few officers are wearing flat caps, but are not in uniform, therefore I can't give you a definitive answer to that question.

Is it me or what, but I seem to remember these scenes better when they are in black and white, and NO I am not colour blind. Thanks Prof.

Morning all That was the view for many of us walking into town from school. Four out of five days, I walked to the Gulson Library (the central library as it was) to do my homework, before then continuing to my mum's shop in White St. Her shop never closed until after six, except Thursday when it closed at lunch time. I was never home until after six, so often missed Dick Barton. If dad picked us up from the shop, his car had a wireless in, yes even in 1956, so was able to listen to the show. There was no strict routine for me getting home, as mum had two other shops, Canley & Willenhall, but she tended to finish up at White St so had a ride home in her Ford Pop. She had a Ford Pop van for a short time, the rear seat being an old armchair that rolled around. Her Pops never had a wireless in them!

The end of the Geisha Cafe seems to line up quite well with the Greens half of the streamline building, at least at the one end. It would be interesting to know how the whole thing does.

Dreamtime I rather think it is what we knew and saw for so many years, they just seem right, but yes, that photo above is everything I liked about the street for over seventeen years.

Hi all, A few years ago, I asked a Coventry solicitor why he had set up office in Warwick Row. He replied in an amusing fashion, that it was because it was close to Geisha Café. His business continues to this day, in offices opposite side of road, but he said sadly the Geisha Café closed not long after.

You never know, sometime along the track a new Geisha Cafe might emerge. People will flock to see and compare with the one we all enjoyed so much. The original Geisha was so popular and memorable one wonders why it had to close.

The Geisha was a favourite with our family, when mum met grandma on a Friday (I was often there) and many years later, 1953, my elder brother's wedding reception was there.

Oh Philip, I can just picture you rolling around in an old armchair in the back of a van! Health & Safety has a lot to answer for, spoiling all our fun these days!
