What a lovely watch and a lively memory to have of your grandfather. I think your pictures are of the same building I have put under the title Charles J Hill.

When I used to walk up to Hearsall Primary School, when Adult Education was based there, I really loved looking at the buildings with top shops. Really made me think! Thumbs up

What a beautiful decoration on the watch-face! Do you know what sort of tools he used to create such fine detail?

I really can't help you there, I believe my dad gave some bits and pieces (tools) to the Museum along with the watch. The Coventry Watch Museum in Spon Street may be able to help. Sorry.

Just to bring things up to date, the rear of the building has been designed to look somewhat similar to the topshops which were demolished when work on the site commenced - this was the view this morning from Duke Street

Thanks Midland Red. I was amazed how fast that building went up at the rear, I've not been out due to ill health so have not been active on here, I only said to my girlfriend last week that I must post a photo of that on this forum and you've beat me to it, but thanks anyway Smile

This was being used as a menswear shop ('Chelsea Man') around the time this picture was taken. It later became a funeral parlour.

More excellent progress on the old Errington's (Astral) factory on the corner of Allesley Old Road/Duke Street in Old Chapelfields now the boarding has been removed. This shows the block of workshops and the master watchmakers house, I personally think they have done a very good job of saving these buildings, especially as they are close to me in Mount Street and were run down (and nearly falling down) for so many years.

According to this link, no 27 was the family home and the factory was extended round it. My great grandfather was apprenticed here in 1862.
