Does anybody remember "Gauntletts" cafe/grocery store, in the square at Jardine Cresent, Tile Hill? I think the family who owned the cafe lived up by Tile Hill Wood School. I was only a nipper at the time, but I remember Teddy boys congregating on the benches in the square.

I couldn't have told you the name of the place but I enjoyed exactly the same meal at least once a week when I worked in the City Arcade in the mid 60's - although strangely I can't recall anything else on their menu, or me ever eating anything there other than sausage, egg & chips! Thumbs up

bad boy (are you?) as far as the cafe in Pool Meadow is concerned, the only one I can remember is the one directly opposite the Priory St. baths next to the Midland Red office (they had the most wonderful contour map of the Midlands in their window, which I used to spend many a happy minute or three looking at) - is this any help? best regards Bernard

As a child, mum used to take me to a cafe that was at the top end on the left in Broadgate (where the bookshop and HSBC cash points are). The buses used to be able to drive all around Broadgate and we had to catch either the 18 or 18a home to Canley from outside Owen Owen. I'm not sure if these were temporary buildings and the cafe may have been a Lyons??

Yes, that was a Lyons in Broadgate and was still there up to the early 1970s as far as I remember.

What about the cafe that used to be upstairs in the old Woolworths?

Recall from previous threads Dutchy about the location of Ram Bridge by the ramp - Think we found an old Telegraph photo from when they were constructing the precinct. At the risk of straying off-topic can anyone tell me if Ram bridge and the Sherbourne were visible pre-war from Smithford Street?

Both sides of the bridge were covered by buildings before the war.

Great stories, how long were you there for? I remember being in the cafe with my mum and was amazed how the lady poured about 20 cups of tea at once.

We have just stopped laughing Mick, my wife was the Cafe supervisor and she was quick she used to line them up and fill, big drain under the counter so any spilled would run away. Lol. I wonder? It could have been my wife. Mr Cain was the manager, Mrs Southgate was manageress My Mum used to clear the tables, I was the maintenance engineer, what a small world? I loved them days I felt very sad when Woolies closed (store number was 123). Colin Smile

Hi Wave I enjoyed a bacon-butty in Woolies, right up until it finally closed, on Saturday mornings.

We occasionally had fish & chips there on a Friday. Likewise the basement restaurant of Owen Owen and Fishy Moore's in New Buildings. Sad
