Visited the Co-op in Corporation Street on Monday. Very depressing and felt very sad about its demise

Yes. there was Men's Outfitting on the first floor and they also sold school uniforms. I worked there in the mid 50s on vacation from College in Bristol. Does anyone recall the unusual lifts (copied I think from a store in Berlin)? They were in perpetual motion so you had to jump in and out at just the right moment as the floor level was always on the move.

Yes I knew Cyril, a very nice man (Mr Roberts to me of course) when I worked in the men's outfitting every long vacation from College in Bristol.

As a teenager, my husband used to love visiting the store and he asks you if you can remember who Santa was. Do you remember Len Day or Fred Price as being Santa at that time. Sounds as if you loved it there. It sounded just like 'Are you Being Served' when my husband describes it at that time. He has never had a bad word for any of the staff there, it sounded a great environment to work in.
Was this Mr Harrison any relation to Graham Harrison who worked at the Co-op when I was there (men's outfitting) in the mid/late 50s?

I noticed that the Coventry Evening Telegraph stated that 'Architects say that the building, which has survived the Blitz' ("Shutters come down") whereas, being as I was a kid in the early fifties I was sure that the Co-op building was built after the war as part of the regeneration of Corporation Street. Could anyone confirm this or is it is a case of memories becoming faded? Phil

It also says the store opened in 1956, which I'm sure is after the war! Foundation stone

The shops and offices on the corner are pre-war but were not owned by the Co-Op at that time. A start on the modern section was made before the war but abandoned when hostilities broke out. The Co-Op was extremely reluctant to move into Corporation Street, preferring to rebuild in Fleet Street instead.
