I think the engine rebuild is complete, the figure quoted is an approximation by how much they have overspent. The costs incurred have become a real hot potato amongst the "friends " of the museum. Roll eyes Roll eyes Roll eyes

What a shame. The current 'square' is a miserable place.

Not really Tony, the buses in the colour image are WMTL not Coventry Corporation Lol so the colour image is from a later date.

Negotiating the long subways to get from one side to the other was not much fun either. Wink

I didn't realise it had subways, and don't even understand why it needed them. I prefer the pre war street and layout, anyway.

It needed them 'cos trying to cross at any of the many junctions with broadgate was a nightmare! If I recall the top of Hertford Street (under where the "bridge" now stands) was particularly bad!

Both Hertford Street and Trinity Street had steel barriers to prevent pedestrians from crossing at street level.

It needed the cars to be managed properly rather than given priority over everything else. Drivers thought/think they should be able to go everywhere unhindered by non-car users, to the point where pro-road lobbying in the post war years was compared to a fascist campaign. Thankfully things have changed, although I'm not to keen on blanket pedestrianisation as it seems to cause more issues. Coventry never seems to to do things in a balanced way, always one extreme or the other. (Until recently, that is.) When were they filled in? They certainly weren't there in the late 1980s when I first came to Coventry.

I remember the subways. Trinity Street, Broadgate and Hertford Street were a continual stream of buses, cars and delivery vehicles, and it would be a brave person or a nutcase who would try to cross any of them. My bus from Green Lane, the old 16, pulled in by Owen Owens and left for Keresley from that same stop, but it left the city for Green Lane from outside of the temporary shops, and there was no way that I would jump the barriers and run across the road.

Coventry was a very busy place in the 60's..
