The next episode of "The Architecture the Railways Built" on Yesterday channel is about Coventry. It is on 8pm Tuesday 28th March and should be available on UKTV play afterwards.

No dedicated Eaton Road thread so adding here as the Station is visible in the distance. Think that must be the turn in to Warwick Road on the right -

What a smashing programme, thank you for pointing it out, Peter. The presenter is so enthusiastic, like a kid at Christmas, and it was wonderful to see him interview the original designer of the station, Derrick Shorten - still going aged 96!

Ditto. There is something wonderful about watching someone who loves their subject that much. I'd never thought about the station before now but I did find it welcoming. The light and open nature meant it felt safe, which isn't that common.

Hi all, I remember The Rocket. The railway (standard gauge) has a history all of its own. It was originally called the Foleshill (industrial) Railway. It was built to connect Alfred Herbert Red Lane foundry, running through the Armament factory in Red Lane, crossing the Stoney Stanton Rd, then through Webster's brick yard, Courtaulds Engineering, then under Foleshill Rd, continuing through Courtaulds Fibres & yarn, where after crossing Kingfield Rd, joined the Coventry to Nuneaton line. When the Red Lane armaments section was closed after the war, Courtaulds Ltd aquired the Railway, as a wholly owned subsidiary. It provided good service to Courtaulds right up to its closure 1971/2. So was there more than one British Celanese in Coventry?

Hi Helen, Not that I know of. British Celanese until the early sixties was it's own company, only connected to Courtaulds by competition & trading one with the other. British Celanese did have an associate company in Bridgwater, called British Cellophane. The whole lot became as one when acquired by Ctlds.

Looking through the newspapers, British Celenese was in Spondon Derby, it was taken over by Courtaulds.

Thumbs up for the replies. I worked for the Old Church Road site in the 90s when it had just become Courtaulds Chemicals. I left just after it became Acordis. I periodically had to trek over to the Spondon site. They had a station and I assume sidings. The Little Heath site was shedding sections just about every year I was there. The weaving part of the site on the other side of the canal had gone just before I started. About a year later the raw material (flake) part of the site shut.
