Looking again at maps it actually looks more like the front to me with the slope of the road - possible that's taken from East Street with the properties on Little South Street cleared? |

It certainly looks like the view from the north of the school, but could just about be taken from off South Street, with the road behind the hedge? So near this but standing in the plot on the right, not in the road with a different hedge to the left? Like the end of Napier Street? |

My father would have been thrilled to see the above views of his old school on Rob's Forum had he been alive today. I have a very old worn and torn last school report of his dated 21-12-18. He had an excellent character. Regular and punctual in his attendance and always showed himself to be a very willing boy. Signed by his head master H. Slaughter, South St. Boy's School. Heavens above, with a name like that you wouldn't want to be any other way would you. Good on you Dad. |

I started at South Street in 1959 at the age of 8, after my family moved into a Victorian house in Godiva St. I remember walking to school up the side entry of the AEI where you could look through the small windows of the machine shop of the AEI and see all the machines and operators. My aunty Annie worked on the capstans there but I never managed to spot her. Upon looking at your Photo I remember opposite the school on the LHS on the corner, there was a shop and on the side wall there was a big blue metal sign screwed onto the wall one story up, advertising tea I think. I was in class 7 and on the window one floor up on the corner, there used to be written on the window "7 for the 7 bright shiners". Our Teacher was Mr French who became Headmaster of Binley Park Comprehensive and stayed there until his retirement. I remember him telling us that before he became a teacher he used to test drive motor cars as they came off the assembly line and had us fascinated at the stories he used to tell us of the doors, lights, wheels etc that used to fall off while he was test driving them. I remember also that when he was young he used to have a pet monkey, but that's another story. |
