I bet that view didn't stay like that for very long - was it damaged much in the war?

Again from Paul Michael Kennelly from the True Coventarian FB Page - the best most detailed image of Stoneleigh Terrace.

Another great find, NY Cheers What year would it be, as there are traffic lights in place - presumably the policeman in the middle of the junction had gone?

Is that an 'F' registered Renault 4? If so, then it must post date August 1967.

Stoneleigh Terrace was designed by the architect James Murray. James was born in Armagh on Dec 9th 1831. He was assigned to architect Walter A Scott of Liverpool c1850. James left Scott and partnered a Mr Barry in Liverpool, 1850-1857. They also had offices in Coventry and when the partnership ended, James took on the Coventry office and settled in Coventry. In 1856 he became the youngest ever fellow of RIBA some 6 years before the renowned architect Pugin was admitted. His sponsors were G Gilbert Scott and P Hardwick. He then moved to London where he formed a partnership with Pugin (1857-1860), then returned to Coventry, also doing some work in Liverpool. Tragically, James died of consumption, age only 32 at "Warwick Green", so we presumed he lived in the Terrace. James is buried in London Road and has a fine arts and crafts style grave maker. Pugin even made it to the funeral. My thanks to Paul Michael Kennelly for the information as a shared interest in Murray and a true Coventrian!

Thanks Neil for the info. I am thinking what a waste of talent for James Murray to die so young. Very imposing buildings indeed. Wave

An interesting old postcard showing an artists impression of Greyfriars Green and Stoneleigh Terrace with the 3 Spires in the background. The cannon can be seen in the foreground. The card doesn't say if this is from a painting.

I think you are right MR. I was just guessing that the row of houses was Stoneleigh Terrace, I don't know that area. So what would the row of houses be on the right?

Some more crackers: Stoneleigh Chambers occupied the spaces to the right of the above photo - as per the text comment, by the late '60's the Terrace was mainly offices but these images really show off the beauty of James Murray's work.

Here's a very slight image of the southern most edge of the Terrace looking by Greyfriars Green in 1897 - Apparently it's the first meeting of motor vehicles for the Coventry to Birmingham run.
