There were (and in some cases still are) some good examples of Art Deco/Moderne architecture among shop buildings. Here is one that was sadly lost in the Blitz: https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/photos/item/FWW01/01/0123/001 The photo was taken in 1931/2 when the adjoining City Arcade was brand new. Both buildings have frontages of white/cream faience 'A ceramic masonry building material of glazed terracotta used as a decorative skin on buildings' very popular in the 1920s/1930s for department stores and large branches of multiple shops like Montague Burton 'The Tailor of Taste', the pre-war Broadgate shop was a good example. They were meant to impress with broad vertical columns enclosing large show windows. Other shops had horizontal window arrangements with banding between floors, like the ones at 49-50 Hertford street illustrated by Osmiroid. That block was built in 1938-9 and at the end was the sadly-missed Green's chemists. There is a lovely 1939 photo on Coventry Digital showing the streamlined neon sign Green's Pharmacy but it's not available right now. When the site is back I'll send a link to the forum. A similar building, possibly by the same architects was at 46-47 Smithford Street built also late 1930s. Occupied by Edgar Palmer, pork butcher etc and latterly by Barratt's shoe shop after they lost their previous shop to bombs, it has the same curved corners as Hertford Street with a central entrance/staircase in the middle. It lasted into the early 1950s when it had to be demolished for the Lower Precinct. Here are some photos; 1939, 2 aerial shots showing it lost its upper storey and 1950s just before demolition.
