Neil is right, it is from the west. When looking more closely at the design of the spires, we can see that the three, from left to right, are Holy Trinity, St. Michael's, St. Osburg's - and on my Google screen-shot below, Christ Church on the far right. Oblique angles in photographs are very deceptive, aren't they!

You are clever I forget about St Osburg's. In my defence it's 'new'. |

Agree. I remembered the Holyhead Rd railway bridge as being the only one advertising "Alvis". I then searched Rob's excellent maps for St Osburg's but sleep got the better of me! |

I have just found a similar picture on the internet posted by the transport museum taken from a little further back, on the corner of Four Pounds Avenue, so I have got it now ! About what date would this me ? I think it must be after the Alvis but before the retail park with all that rough ground on the right. Spent many afternoons with mum in St Catherine's Court looking out just across the road there at Morrisons. |

Was it this one Anne? Must be from the same set - I think I may have even posted this one on perhaps a Holyhead Road comment/thread already as it was in my 'Album'. Hillman Imp's came out in 1963.............

Yes thats the one Neil, Mum's sheltered flat was a little further to the left on the other side of the road, there is a church there as well. I was thinking the crossing was the one by tge traffic lights but I think the one in tge picture may be further up by the entrance to Morrisons |

Yes, Anne, I think the crossing we used as little kids was nearer the traffic lights where Holyhead Road crosses Four Pounds Ave. I can't remember if there were traffic lights there in the sixties, but remember the old lollipop chap on the crossing.
A regular sight was the armoured cars from Alvis being test-driven on the road. Also, the buses from Daimler: just a chassis, engine and four (maybe six) wheels, plus the driver's seat. He would drive them in all weather, with a thick coat if needed. No seat belt. No crash helmet. Wouldn't be allowed today with elf'n safety. |

Yes Slim, we used to see the buses in Lawrence Saunders Road somtimes. The drivers used to have thick coats and scarves and gloves on but still looked frozen to death ! |

Oh my! That looks just like my little A 30 in the middle. It was the first car I actually owned just for me. I'd owned other cars along with my husband but in 1973 it was all mine. I think it cost about 50 pounds. No heat and a row of clothes pegs on the choke - taken off one by one- to start it in the morning. I drove it until 1979 when I sold it, before leaving the UK, to a guy who was buying it for his son. When he told me his son was on his 4th car I almost grabbed the key back. |

I'm not sure when Alvis on Holyhead Rd closed? I remember in the early 80's having a neighbour whom was a welder there, or maybe that could have been when they were at Walsgrave?.
If that picture is around 67 or later, that blue Imp could have been Midland Reds or mine !! My reg was BAC 211B (1964 model)

Off the web -
In 1990 Alvis moved its Holyhead Road factory to Walsgrave before production moved to Telford in 1999. |

Thanks Neil
When they moved to Walsgrave, they started a division called Alvis Fenestration that made solid cast bronze window frames !
Neil, gone off the thread a little here. Please move to the Alvis thread?
