Likewise I have a framed Cash's Bookmark. Sad day indeed. Yet another element of old Coventry disappearing. |

Hi all
As sad as this news is, I am not giving up hope for some kind of venture. The brand name of the business is probably worth more than its buildings & machinery. The worst case scenario is if it does close, but nearly as bad is if it moves out of Coventry. KPMG are as good as it gets with this kind of issue. Let's hope. |

Sad news, indeed. While not as sanguine as yourself - PhilipInCoventry - as to a positive outcome for Coventry in all of this, I certainly would hope for as much.
When my son was a junior-schooler - he is now in his final year at university - it was still possible to buy woven name-tags to attach to kids' outer-clothes, gym-kits and such, right here in Toronto. These name-tags - which could be purchased at a number of stores in Toronto, were processed in Toronto, but the maker was Cash's operation in Coventry. I explained this to my son at the time, and for all that he understood that Coventry (his dad's home town) was no back-water, and for all that he long understood that our city's history was steeped-in ribbon-making and the like, my son's pride-in-ancestry was palpable.
Curiously enough, I was speaking to him (my son) late yesterday of the top-shops in Cash's Lane, prompted by Jeff's posting of the top-shops in Hurst Road, Longford. Sam had a clear memory (from 2001 and earlier) of seeing the top-shops on Cash's Lane, the top-shops in Lower Holyhead Road.
It is not enough, however, to preserve the memory - Coventry deserves that Cash's methods of production continue to be a part of Coventry, to benefit Coventry and its people. 'Nuff said. |

Hi all, I have just found this forum, very interesting. We have been collecting Cash's bookmarks for many years now and it's a great shame that they are gone. It was quite a surprise to see the bookmark Tony showed, was unknown to us but not a surprise as I believe there to be many more to be discovered. To this aim I would ask if anyone who has Cash's bespoke markers for sale or any info on them, I would like to hear from anyone who may be able to help fill in some gaps, and lastly can anyone confirm Cash's bookmark Courtaulds Foleshill Railway from about 1970. Many thanks. Geoff geoffrey harris

Hi Hunter, and welcome to our forum
Just for reference, here's the bookmark that you refer to. I don't believe I have another one, but I'll let you know if I find one

It's just been announced that the company has been saved by a management "buy-out". All 11 employees jobs are safe and they are looking for production to restart immediately. There is even talk of them taking more staff on in the near future |

It appears the management have been given financial backing by one of their own customers, based in - you've guessed it - Hong Kong! It's great that Cash's stay in business, but I do wonder if there will be any "British" companies left before long. |

Hi,
I have a lot of the Cash's cards and bookmarks, but I do have a practice piece Hilda Pearson made about 70 odd years ago when she was young girl, she gave it to me on one time when we were in Longford and now I have it framed on the wall. It's of a golfer and has PLUSUEDE across, London made, hygienic sports attire.
Mrs Hilda Pearson lived in Longford but when married her husband and herself lived in the Gas Works, I can remember she new all the history of around and had people getting in touch to find things out. Lovely lady.

Hi all. I worked at Cash's from 1963 to 2007, in design most of the time. I've been putting together a website, mainly of my bookmark designs, mostly bespoke & OLD woven samples I saved from the skip. Plus woven samples / odd artwork from others, 1950s 60s 70s (mainly in-house designers). I spend too much time on my PCs. Woven Stuff page for Bespoke Bookmarks.

Hello Pete and welcome to the forum
None of those bookmarks would have looked out-of-place in 1884 let alone 1994!

It is a fantastic print of the chimney, wish I had one. . Cash's had the same framed print on a wall in the offices.J & J Cash chimney being demolished, - link - worked on top floor of building behind it - card cutting until it was computerised, next as Design room 1981.
heritage of Bedworth - could the chap who gave you that talk, be David Halstead, he's the only person I can think of.

Thanks for posting this information Morgana - it`s exactly what I have been looking for, as part of my family (grandmother`s side) were engaged in the early ribbon weaving trade and she used to speak of "Journeymen" mentioned here.
Makes frightening reading in places
