It might be better if they combined the Herbert and the Car museum and put all this stuff together to make it into a larger attraction. The (old) Herbert is a poor building, and inside seems barely fit for use as a museum, and the area around the car museum is made up of backages, awful 'squares' (that horrendous windswept place where the clock used to be) and semi-derelict industrial/club buildings. The Herbert land could probably be sold to the University. Create a quarter around the Burges/Palmer Lane/Grammar School/City Wall, etc. All this bits and pieces all over the place just don't have the critical mass to attract people! The car museum already seems to do OK, and it isn't stuck up in the middle of University Buildings. Something like Birmingham's new library that's an attraction in itself would help! These b****y awful 1950s and 1960s buildings are useless, barely fit for the purpose they were built for and virtually impossible to adapt!
Even better make it somewhere that also puts on events and keeps changing what it does and publicise it more. This city is pitiful at promoting itself even when there's something brilliant happening. |

I'm a bit of a fan of 50's buildings since I moved from a 300 year old house to a 1950's one, which is much easier to live in. It doesn't leak, for one and you can actually get it warm. The windows are big too.
I think you have a point though Flapdoodle.
How about they put the Library in the Herbert and give us back the Locarno ?
We could have a landmark building for the Art Gallery opposite the Motor Museum on the spare land.
