3 Binley Rd, known in the late 80's - early 90's as the STOKER.
Was this at one time the vicarage for All Saints?

To be honest, I dont know. It could well be. There used to be a large garden to the rear where the fetes were held. Only trouble is, as a child everything looked big but now when I go back and look they seem small? Mind you, it is in the right place. Thanks for the photo. |

The back garden was massive, with space for a stage and stalls, etc.
It was the first house on the left after the bridge coming out of town.
Have always wondered why its street number was 3.
Any ideas?

That has got to be the old vicarage then, as far as it being number 3, no idea. Unless one house was bombed out or damaged during the war. For some reason I do not remember a garage at the side of the house. Could this account for the large garden? The missing house that is. Or did the Gosford Park workmans hut or the toilets count as no.1? My recollection is now from sixty years ago. |

No. All Saints Vicarage was in Cheylesmore, at the far end of Paradise Street which later became Parkside.

I think that No.3 Binley Rd was Cleverley's dentists. |

Philip, If my memory serves me well (which it doesn't always), I can remember there being a dentist next door to the Stoker - would this be Cleverley's - during the '80s, & I think the early '90s.
Not too sure, though!

Hi I remember Cleverley's as he was my dentist until I was about ten (1957). I can't be sure about the number but the photo sticks out in my mind. At some point after that he moved further down Binley Rd, but I am now lost for further info. It might need a look on the electoral lists.
Best wishes & thank you for your reply. |

Hi Ghengis, in answer to your missing house number on the Binley Rd. Looking at an old map, it would seem that number 1 was demolished to make way for the railway line and bridge. It stood in a very large piece of ground, bigger than the others. Also, attending All Saints Church for services and Sunday School down Vecqueray St until 1959, the only place I can recall going to for fetes and garden parties was on the Binley Rd. So, unless the vicarage that Dutchman states only had a small garden then the garden used on the Binley Rd could have been donated from some kind person for use of the church. Still looking for info? |

Hi Ghengis, took a while in coming but I am now getting answers. The vicar at All Saints in the 50s was the Rev Wingate, from 1961-7 was the Rev Anthony Williams. The church closed in 1967. The lady in question who has supplied some of the missing details attended All Saints since childhood and was married there in 1967. St Annes took on the parish and is now known as St Annes and All Saints, which is located on Humber Ave just off the London Rd. Also, the lady confirms that the vicarage was no.3 Binley Rd. She is still a parishioner today. Many thanks to the vicar and parishioners for their time and trouble and e-mails. Why it was called the Stoker I can only guess it had something to do with Fire and Brimstone (sermons) lol. |

Just spotted this old thread.
When I first got married I lived at no 3 in the late 1960's and shared the top floor with another family; the owners lived below.
I was led to believe no 1 was lost to the railway line. The gardens parties was organised by the vicar who lived at no 5 before the house became a dentist. At the rear were stables and further a field was Gosford Swimming Pool. At some time the house was extended and a ballroom built to entertain personnel from Hillman Motor Company. In the later years the building was used by their apprentices and there were evidence the building was associated with the motor industry for I found many engine and gearbox parts. |
