This is the best and most comprehensive info I have ever seen on the Sherbourne, a good bit of history and many photos and drawings. Well worth a look. |

Another interesting find. I've never seen that well on Holyhead Road. Next time I'm out and about on my bike I might try to find it.
The Radford Pool looks interesting. I visited an area in Cardiff that had a lake in it, and made an excellent feature to the area, and was a local attraction and hence busy. |

The article says the well is in Lammas Road but it is actually in Beaumont Crescent, the next Road, about opposite the pedestrian crossing to Morrisons. I used to push my mum round in a wheelchair from St Catherines House and it did not look so tidy then but it is a hidden little treasure. |

I agree with Mike H that this article is first rate. Only one error I noted: Burges is a corruption of St. John's Bridges, not St Michael's. |

I remember the river used to flow through the Swanswell park, there was a wooden bridge over it, it went to the left of the park and ran alongside the Swanswell Pub, later to be covered over, there was plenty of fish in the river which was not very wide, I assume it must have ran underground towards Gulson Road. roger wing

That would be Springfield Brook.
Still exposed at the side of houses in Brooklyn Road and Matlock Road I believe. |

I don't remember it at all and I used to play a lot in the park. When was it covered over?

The wooden bridge had disappeared long before the brook or river as it was sometimes called during late 60's early early 70's was covered with concrete slabs and topsoil. Before this the small area at the rear of the pub facing the park had an outside seeating area where you could have a pint with the then open brook flowing past with the cloud of 'gnats' hovering above the water with a good view of the park. You may remember the old wooden building which was like a shack across the road from the pub which was at one time a secondhand shop but before that a pushbike shop doing repairs and sales, next to this was the bombsite that the new bus station is built over, to the rear was the old flour mill with the old public gents toilets which I believe are still there but closed down years ago, then you had the cinema on the corner roger wing

Good find Morgana
The cottages predate the Triumph factory. I would have expected the animals on the bridge to have been travelling in the opposite direction, ie: towards Smithfield Market rather than away from it.
