On 15th July 1981 Warwickshire commenced what would prove to be the penultimate County Championship match ever to be played on Courtaulds Ground. At the end of the day, visitors Leicestershire were 80-1 in reply to Warwickshire's paltry 136 all out, in which skipper Dennis Amiss's 27 was top score. The home side went on to lose the match by an innings and 61 runs.

Hi MR Wave The Paybody picture is such a reminder to me, although that is the entrance to the main single storey hospital building further inside, that was demolished. Thank you. Cheers

16th Jul 1771 Workmen began to repair Grey Friars Steeple, and to rebuild the top which had been blown down in 1763; a gilt ball and vane was set on it.

On 16th July 2007, Coventry Stadium staged Round 1 of the FIM Speedway World Cup. Great Britain were victorious on 60 points, ahead of Sweden (49), Russia (27) and USA (20). Scott Nicholls topped the score charts for GB with a 15 point maximum, with Chris Harris on 14, Lee Richardson 11, Simon Stead 10, Eddie Kennett 10. Jonas Davidsson top scored for Sweden with 16 points from reserve, Dennis Gizatullin recorded 11 for Russia and Greg Hancock (15) was USA's top rider. Sadly, GB went on to finish last in the final in Leszno, Poland, behind the host country (55), Denmark (52) and Australia (29). Again Scott Nicholls top scored, with 7 points, with Lee Richardson (4), Chris Harris (3) and Simon Stead (1) the other contributors to a paltry 15 points total.

Hawkesbury Church School. THE OPENING of the above School is fixed for WEDNESDAY, the 16th July Next, when Divine Service will be held in HAWKESBURY IRON CHURCH, in the morning at Eleven o'clock, and in the Afternoon at Half-past Three. The Sermons will be preached by the Venerable the ARCHDEACON OF COVENTRY. As there is a large debt on the new School, collections will be made at both Services. Also, on Sunday Evening, July 20, there will be a collection in aid of the School at Hawkesbury Iron Church. Service at Half-past Six. The hymn will be sung by the Children.

17th Jul 1980 Plans are approved to close Coventry Zoo and turn it into The Racquet Centre. 17th Jul 1626 Two Coventry Chamberlains were fined £20 each because their Lammas Feast was not as good as the one the previous year! (Nothing's changed there then, as anyone whose children have demanded a birthday party to match their friend's 'grand event' will know! Wink )

I remember going to the zoo and being upset by the elephant. It was displayed in an enclosure made entirely of concrete with a chain attached to one of its legs. It stood there just rocking from side to side. Never have liked zoos since. So glad attitudes towards how we treat wild animals have changed over the years.

19th Jul 1821 The coronation of George IV was celebrated in this City by a Public Procession, comprising the Mayor and Corporation, Companies and Clubs. An Ox was roasted in Cross Cheaping, and forty Sheep in different parts of the town. 2,045 loaves of bread, and 3,444 quarts of ale were also given away, and at night £20 was devoted to a display of fireworks. The total expenditure was £639. 12s. 6d. (Equivalent to £57,000 in 2017.) 19th Jul 1919 Anti German riots start in Broadgate - ironically on the day of the Godiva peace procession.
