Of course, as confirmed earlier on in this thread, the building at the top of the road was the canal offices, not a house.

Midland Red, when were they canal offices? From 1930 onwards the Inland Waterways offices were I believe in Rugby, certainly during the fifties. Part of the house was Arthur Thomas plumbing. It could have been built for the wharf supervisor. I know my family's wharf offices were in Bishop Street but I have no idea of the layout in the 1920s.

I think I'm right in saying the third line from the left must be the spot the 'Parson's Nose' was built on. It would also appear that both photos are decades apart and the last buildings on the right had had awnings fitted presumably turning them from domestic dwellings into commercial ones in later years. Also, I think in the top photo, Corporation Street has yet to be built.

The demolition for Corporation Street was underway in 1920 but it started at the St John's end. The aerial photo above is from 1931. The street photo is pre 1888 because there are no tram lines. So maybe 50+ years between them.

Blimey, thanks Helen for the accuracy. No wonder the buildings look (to me anyway) quite new in the 19th century photo.

Do you mean TOOBY, ADKINS the leather merchants partnership? This partnership has an advertisement in the 1912 Kelly's which is freely available on the net. They have been in the Coventry directories from 1912 to 1960.

Yes, thanks. My dad bought my large leather briefcase from there before I left home for college in Bristol.

Sad news about my old place of work (West Orchard House, 51 years ago) - but it's been an eyesore for many years
