Yes Helen I've picked up some great spots off films. As you say you tend to get rarer views that way as photographers only stand in a certain position to get the relative shot they want. I knew you would have been through them! Big grin I only realised Gibberds were on that corner from a directory mention on here - No.50 - this photo I added in post#19 earlier is zoomed in of the building of the Council House so pre 1920 - You can see them on the corner here (just!) -

Yep agreed. Steve and I shot a lot of stuff on my Go-Pro of the town centre a couple of years ago and it is quite easy to take a single frame from the resultant imagery. Must do more this year.

I recently had a tidy up and was recycling old files when I came across this cutting from the Telegraph. I apologize if it's been posted before, it's in poor condition and has been cropped but perhaps someone from the Archive could post the original. I thought it unusual because it is looking south and the buildings inside the arch appear to be more industrial compared with the more common northern images..

Thank you, Moriarty. I would give it five likes (if I could) as I have never seen this before yet it was there when I was a babe in pushchair aged 2yrs 3months when the air raids came, and in the suburbs I survived as did all my family, parents, brother, and grandparents (both sets).

Oooooh oooooh Moriarty, that's a cracker. Helen, I'd thought the archway next to the Dragoon Cycle company was to Palace Yard but that does not look like it through that one.

A very good image Moriarty. Thumbs up Almost Neil, the Palace Yard is just to the right of the cycle shop. So the building to the left of the archway was number 38. Thumbs up

Is there a date on that one, Moriarty? So near but so far, Helen!

It's such a nonentity of a building and so unknown that there may be an image out there that nobody recognises it. I also suspect that people were so eager to get inside that they never stopped to capture the drab outside. When it was created it would have been the height of Palladian splendour.

Yes Helen - it's just funny (and frustrating for us!) that areas such as this remain uncaptured yet others are commonplace. The hunt continues!

I blame Kaga. Instead of chasing the girls and the gee-gees he should have been out with a camera photographing it all for us Wink

So do I, but then you would have had so many photo's of so many weird things that would have drove Rob insane. But no, I never had a camera, didn't ever dream I would have so many to share them with. Even in the fifties this forum would have been an HG Wells special of science fiction.

Sorry, there is no date (however perhaps the bikes in the window would be a clue!) The caption reads "Do you remember buying a cycle from the Dragoon shop in Coventry?" "This undated picture from the ARCHIVES shows the handsome shop frontage at 39 Earl Street, next to the entrance to Palace Yard (and then it says) the yard is still there, but what has taken the place of this old terrace?" The photo is probably still somewhere in the archive, it has been cut down to fit the page. I can't see why anyone would take a photo of half a shop and an entrance. The complete photo would probably show Palace Yard entrance as well, this part of the photo has been used in error because it says Earl Street on the wall and looks better. As they have labelled this Palace Yard I would guess the person who took it would know where Palace Yard was.

Looking towards Earl St with no Council House, so presumably c.1911 approx. Forum library image
