Alhough I knew about the moving of the tree, it's nice to read in more detail the effort put into this. The roads in the day were probably cobbles, imagine the difficulty in getting a grip for the horses. The tree itself must have been fairly shallow rooted because they only went down a yard or so, nevertheless it would have been quite a weight to move. Thanks to all involved in researching this, very interesting.

You paint the picture very well, NormK! The struggle for the horses on those cobbles. Robthu and I have tried hard to find more details in the newspaper articles of the day without much success. We would have been so pleased to have found a sketch of the carriage or the procession through the town! We haven't given up but if anyone does found more details about this strange event, we should be very grateful

Hi I spent several hours trying to finding my 2x great grandparents grave at London Road Cemetery. They are in square 236, Grave 73, Florence Elizabeth Townley nee Wiliams buried 29th Jan 1946 and her husband Frederick Daniel Townley buried 8th Mar 1939. No joy in finding them, wish that LRC had better signage of where the squares are etc. Could anybody give an indication of where this square is? We could find squares 243, 244, 255, 256 which is on a diagonal to 244 if you carry on the same diagonal in the opposite direction you should come to 236 which is the one we are looking for could not find it. There is a headstone. Please can anyone help.

Can anyone tell me what the arched 'entrance' - now bricked up and appears to go under the cemetery - actually is? Opposite the entrance to Charterhouse. Always wondered.

My dad tells me it was an entrance for funerals (assumedly horse-drawn), whereas the main entrance (next to the "lodge") was used by visitors. It was later bricked up and used as an air raid shelter during WW2.

Thanks Garland I'd love a look behind those bricks! I'm guessing then that there would have been an incline up to the main burial ground at the time for the carriageway.

News report of burial of victims of Coventry Blitz. 21 November 1940: Coventry buries her dead

I am new to the site and am particularly interested in London Rd Cemetery Burials. I have lived in Coventry for 63 years yet never been to the Cemetery. Through my recent research with Ancestry and with the aid of the Coventry Family History CD I have discovered that I have at least 23 relatives buried there (18 Oldhams and 5 Reddingtons) 5 Oldhams are in Square 210 Grave 66, 5 in Square 84 Grave 95, 4 in Square 156 Grave 37 and 4 in Square 139 Grave 38 I also have 3 Reddingtons in Square 203 Grave 178 and 2 Reddingtons and a Hutton (infant Grandson) in Square 258 Grave 27 From the map attached on post 8 I can see the location of Squares 84 and 139 but cannot see Squares 156, 210, 203 & 258. Does the full grid map exist anywhere (The Herbert for instance)? I would appreciate any held & guidance. Regards Derrick

The Resources Guide, produced by the History Centre at the Herbert, says they have plans of the cemetery to locate graves. The History Centre is 024 7623 7583, hours Tue-Sat 10:30-3:30
