I'm thinking that's quite a short dress for a lady and would say it was a man in a tunic and hose.

I was initially going by the soft looking face, but thinking about it again, I think you are right Elaine - more likely a king. Obviously no hose ban back then!!! Roll eyes I've just looked at some possible candidates on Google Images, and I wonder if it could be Richard II?

Talking to work colleagues is it true that from the burning ruins a 'wooden cockerel' was pulled out and replaced onto the top of the spire. Cheers Cheers Big grin

Sorry for the delay responding Steve, I nearly missed this one! In all the books I've read about the cathedral though, I've never seen anything at all about a wooden cockerel. Sounds like a great story though - has anyone else ever heard it mentioned?

Going round the ring road last night I noticed the old cathedral spire has a golden wind cockerel on top, is this the replacement of the wooden one Cheers Cheers Big grin

Many thanks for this Philip I missed the broadcast but it brought back memories of travelling most weekends in my childhood when accompanying my dad on 'tower grabs' all over the country. My early life was permeated with either sitting in belfries watching my dad and his friends ringing or exploring country churchyards with the sound of the bells resonating around me. At his funeral in 1977, friends rang handbells to one of the methods and that was the point at which our tears flowed. I am fairly sure that I knew heritage's father and that he rang on that occasion. Jack appears in the same photo as my dad on the Coundon Wedge thread of this site. Dad used to ring regularly at several local towers - St Thomas, Keresley, St Michael's, Stoke, All Saints, Allesley and St Giles, Exhall. He began his ringing career at St James, Southam, in 1923 at the age of 15 and rang in a total of 3261 different towers before his death in June 1977 at the age of 69.

Sadly, my dad was never able to ring on the cathedral bells, though he often expressed the wish to do so, because they were out of commission until the tower strengthening in 1986, nearly a decade after his death.

Hi Charabanc, your father more than likely rang the bells at St. Thomas's, Keresley, then on the 28th October, 1961, the day my husband and I were married. My parents arranged for the bells to be rung for us as a surprise as indeed in was. So I was happy to read your post above. {:o)

What a great place the old cathedral must have been. It's a pity they didn't build it straight in the first place. I have a pic that shows the centre line does not run down the centre of the building. Blush
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

Hi all Wave A couple of weeks ago, I visited the Guild Hall cafe, for a coffee. Whilst recording pictures of the entrance courtyard, everytime a vehicle travelled up & down the cobbled road outside, next to the old cathedral, it was as though a road drill was in use. This reminded me of costing meetings with structural engineers, where the load bearing strengths of walls & floors was being discussed. I learned that a structure supporting a moving weight has to be a lot stronger than one supporting a static weight. In the short time that I was there, at least a dozen vehicles went along, bouncing up & down over the cobbles, sending vibrations everywhere. Surley this is an issue for thought as to regards the integrity of the old cathedral walls, or am I just too simple? Sad Edited by PhilipInCoventry, 17th Jul 2012 6:18 pm
