I had some magical nights at the Locarno in the 60s I used to go the over 21 nights when I was about 16/17, all you had to do was remember your made up birthdate, because that's what they asked you. I remember the glitter ball that would sparkle around the floor for the last smooch. I saw Humphrey Lyttelton there, he was a really lovely man. Oh what memories, I guess I forgot I was ever that young Wink

I saw Geno Washington, The Who, The Kinks and many more bands but the one we used to queue for and at times it used to be down by the Market Tavern was Geno Washington and The Ram Jam Band. They were brilliant, I have great memories from about 1969 onwards.

Good times. Anyone remember the Dutch group 'Shocking Blue' playing there late 60's or maybe even 1970?

Hello, Just looking at posts on this site and although living in London and having lived in several places around the world hold very fond memories of the Locarno in Coventry where I was born, Courthouse Green, I used to work there as a disc jockey during the week and at weekends in the 1960's 1963/5? along with Micky I think his name was, always wore a gold lame jacket. Rolling Stones came when I was there although I also did the Whisky a GoGo in Birmingham by the station. Had lots of budding groups at the time now famous, Spencer Davis Group, Long John Baldry, etc Visit Coventry when able, changed a lot of course, the 60's were the heydays. Motor works, lots of money about. Feel sad that Coventry is having a hard time over these last few years. Broad Street School and Courthouse Green. Ahhhh those were the days!! Keith Robinson

Welcome Warwick40, Would like to see the photos if possible especially round the area you mentioned - Navi/Bridge. Although this is not the Locarno thread and I don't want to lead you astray, I am sure someone will put us right. Wave

1972/3, Led Zeppelin played at the Locarno, I'm sure they only charged £1 to get in, anyone remember this?

During the war my father was in the Navy, and he was on Arctic Convoys. He brought back a Russian Balalaika from one of his trips. Not being at all musical, after the war he gave up trying to play it, and lent it to his brother-in-law Laurence Hewitt. He in turn passed it on to friends who were starting, I think, a dance studio - which they called 'The Balalaika'. The instrument was hung on the wall. I don't suppose anyone out there has any memories of this - or even improbably a photo - or more unlikely still, knows what became of our balalaika. I would really love to know. We are currently putting together an account of my father's naval career during the war. Shoestring
